10 Fun Facts You Might Not Know About Satoru Gojo – The Strongest Sorcerer In Jujutsu Kaisen
Adapting from Gege Akutami’s critically acclaimed manga title, Jujutsu Kaisen is once again making headlines in the anime fandom after season 1’s imminent success. Satoru Gojo, one of season 1’s most favorite characters, makes his flamboyant return in the second season as the first five episodes’ protagonist. Widely known as the strongest sorcerer in the modern era, Gojo wields the ridiculously powerful curse technique Limitless, which deems him untouchable from any kind of physical and magical attacks.
Besides his powerful abilities and gorgeous outlook, the Special-grade sorcerer also captures everyone’s hearts thanks to his undeniable charisma and aloof personality, though he always looks after his students when they are in need. However, there are still a lot of fascinating facts about the Gojo clan descendant that not even his most loyal fans know about. Let’s learn more about Satoru Gojo and his 10 most interesting facts in this article.
#1. His ancestor is a real person.
According to Gojo, he and Yuta Okkotsu both share the same ancestor, Michizane Sugawara, who’s a real-life figure from the Heian Period. In Shinto practice, he’s referred to as Tenjin, the God of Learning. Similarly, the Gojo clan is also a real family bloodline that descended from the Sugawara clan, which means 5th Street.
#2. His name means “Enlightenment”.
Gojo’s first name, Satoru, is quite a common name in modern Japanese society. It is written as 悟, meaning “Enlightment”. When you think about it, his name makes sense, as he’s the first person in four hundred years to awaken the Six Eyes and Limitless.
#3. He has a sweet tooth.
At times in the anime, we can see Gojo often chomping his food on the street when he’s with his students, and most of the time, he eats something sweet. According to MAPPA, Gojo has a keen taste for sweet things as they stimulate his brain and relieve him from stress, much like a certain detective from Death Note that we all know. Hopefully, his Limitless technique can prevent diabetes.
#4. He was spoiled rotten as a kid.
Compared to the Zen’in members like Maki or Megumi, Satoru had a fairly easy time at the Gojo estate. As the first child in four hundred years in the Gojo clan to be born with the Six Eyes and Limitless cursed technique, he’s cherished by every single member of the clan like a national treasure, and according to Gege himself, his current cheeky attitude is thanks to being so spoiled since he was little.
#5. His least favorite drink is alcohol.
Unlike a lot of mature characters in anime, Gojo isn’t a drinker, in fact, he hates alcohol. The reason isn’t listed by the author Gege, but since Gojo has a sweet tooth, we can understand why.
#6. One of his theme songs is from Avicii.
Befitting of a special character as he is, Gojo has not one, but two theme songs. One of them is "Into an Unseen Tomorrow” by Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and the other is "Shame on Me" by the late artist Avicii.
#7. He’s a die-hard Digimon fan.
Or at least, he used to be. During a flashback scene in Season 2, Gojo was seen talking with his best friend Geto at the Jujutsu High School, and used the popular anime as a reference when the latter was talking about cursed technique. Considering how Gojo is a millennial, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Coincidentally, both Gojo’s voice actors in English and Japanese, had their roles in various Digimon anime as well.
#8. His design is based on a Naruto character, but it isn’t Kakashi.
As Gojo made his anime debut, many immediately compared him to Kakashi, the popular teacher from Naruto. The two indeed shares many similarities, as they both wear a piece of cloth on their face, they’re both ridiculously powerful white-haired teachers, they have a cheeky attitude, and their childhood friend became a villain.
However, according to Gege, Gojo’s initial design is in fact from a supporting character in the Naruto series named Tobitake Tonbo. This Tonbo wraps bandages and a ninja headband over his eyes, much like Gojo, however his character is so minor, that even Naruto author Kishimoto forgot about him when asked.
#9. He doesn’t have a hobby.
As a one-of-a-kind sorcerer of the clan, Gojo is extremely talented, and can do everything with little effort spent. This may explain why he doesn’t have any real hobby (except annoying the heck out of Megumi and his colleagues), since he’s too good at doing things, he also gets bored quickly.
#10. He isn’t loved by his own creator.
This seems like a ridiculous take, but it's actually true. Despite the immense popularity, the author Gege Akutami rarely says some nice things about Gojo. In fact, some of the stuff he blurted out about the fan-favorite character is rather rude. For example, Gege once said: “Now that Gojo is gone, it looks like 2020 is going to be a good year.”
That’s not all, as Gege also deemed Gojo as a person who had no “personality” and even suggested that fans should vote for Nanami Kento, another fan-favorite, in the next Jujutsu Kaisen popularity poll instead of the white-haired sorcerer.
