Tom Holland Will Only Return To Play Spider-Man Under One Unique Condition, And It’s A Hard One To Fulfill

Making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut back in 2016 in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland has been climbing the ranks as one of the leading actors of the studio, and his Spider-Man is one of the favorite and most anticipated superheroes in Marvel’s history. Since then. Seven years have passed, and Holland’s Spidey has his own movie trilogy, and appears in the two most ambitious projects of the Infinity Saga: Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

And as the British actor’s contract with the studio is coming to an end, fans are holding their breath to see if he is going to extend the contract for some more years. We’ve already said our goodbye to Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans as their contracts ran out after Endgame, and we’re not ready to depart with our favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man either. Sharing with Yahoo Entertainment, Tom Holland stated that he’d be more than ready to return as the Wall-Crawler in Spider-Man 4, however, there’s a condition to be fulfilled first.

During the interview with Yahoo Entertainment vis Kevin Polowy, the 27-year-old star talked briefly about the currently in progress Spider-Man 4, and what would it take for him to return as Peter Parker in future MCU projects. The actor said: "If we can't find a way to compete with the third one, he'll swing off into the sunset."

By this statement, Holland implies that the fourth movie needs to be at least on par, if not better, than the franchise’s previous entry, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released in 2021.

#2. Why did Tom Holland’s requirement put Marvel between a rock and a hard place?

Surely, this is a difficult condition to meet, as Spider-Man: No Way Home is widely considered the best part of the MCU’s Web-Slinger trilogy, both plot-wise and scale-wise. Besides a solid story to conclude the trilogy, the film also introduces the concept of the Multiverse, which was later exploited further in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The multiverse is an important matter that is integral to Phase 4 and 5 of the MCU, especially in Marvel’s next crossover projects: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Secret Wars.

Besides, No Way Home also brings in a bunch of Spidey’s most iconic arch-nemesis, such as the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, or Sandman...Two previous Spider-Man versions of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield also make their entrance in the movie, teaming up with Holland’s Spidey to defeat the bad guys and send them back to their respective universes.

#3. About MCU’s next Spider-Man movie.

According to Sony producer Amy Pascal and Tom Holland himself, the production of Spider-Man 4 is already in its early stages of development. However, due to the recent writers’ strike in the US, the film’s progress has been temporarily halted and is expected to resume later this year. So far, Sony and Marvel haven’t made any disclosure about the movie’s release date or synopsis yet, and the casting is also still shrouded in mystery.

Since Tom Holland hasn’t signed a new contract with Marvel Studios just yet, it’s not certain if he’ll take part in any other MCU project after Spider-Man 4, which raises the following question: Will Spider-Man 4 be his last MCU movie?

#4. Who can replace Spider-Man if the actor decides to conclude his time?

In fact, the question should be: Who can replace Tom Holland as Spider-Man after his contract runs out? With the Wall-Crawler being a crucial character in the MCU, especially in the upcoming events of Secret Wars, where he plays a pivotal role in the comics, it’s hard to see Marvel replacing him with a brand-new superhero. Instead, it’d make much more sense if they’d find one who can inherit his legacy, someone who Peter could pass the mantle to.

In a recent interview, Pascal also revealed a Miles Morales project in production. With his camouflage ability and electricity power coming into play, Miles is like an upgraded version of Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, and is the best candidate by far to take the title of the Web-Slinger. Besides, with the two animated Spider-Verse Movies gaining favorable reviews from fans, it’s a perfect time for Sony and Marvel to bring Miles Morales into the MCU.

Do you think Peter will extend his contract with Marvel? Would Miles Morales be a worthy candidate to be the next Spider-Man? Let us know in the comment.
