Superman's Enemy, Lobo And The $200 Million Movie We Didn't Get To See

The future of the DC Extended Universe is as uncertain as it has ever been due to the change in management at both Warner Bros. Discovery and DC. Henry Cavill is no longer playing Superman despite his recent announcement to do so in Black Adam. The third installment of Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman series, which has been one of the more successful ones for the DCEU, is no longer in the works. No one is really sure what the DCEU's future will include with James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge.
Gunn and Safran appear to seek a thorough overhaul of the DC Extended Universe, balancing well-known and obscure characters. For instance, they want to bring back a much younger Superman, and they want to keep on with some of the fan favorites, like Peacemaker. Who is likely to be a target, though, in their ambition to expand to other properties?

Lobo is a character whose film adaptation has long been sought after by fans. Lobo is an extraterrestrial bounty hunter from the alien species known as the Czarnians. He was once referred to by Marvel creator Stan Lee as his favorite of all of DC's characters. He was one of the most well-known DC characters in the 1990s, so it's surprising that DC hasn't yet found a way to make a movie on him or at least includes him in one of their other movies.
Several previous attempts to bring Lobo to the big screen included the addition of Will Smith, Dwayne Johnson, and filmmakers Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton at various points of the production process. Of course, Smith and Johnson would probably be off the table if the Lobo movie were to be made again, as they have now gone on to star in their own DC movies, Suicide Squad and Black Adam.

The most current iteration of the Lobo film came in 2018, under the direction of Michael Bay. That's right, the director of Transformers and Bad Boys had planned to produce a film about the most deadly bounty hunter in the galaxy, and it would have been fantastic. The plot was so ambitious that it would have required a budget of $200 million or more, hence the movie was never made.
DC started looking into their choices for darker superhero material after the success of the hard-R-rated Deadpool movie, and an anti-hero picture about a bounty hunter murdering intergalactic criminals suited the bill. The fact that they couldn't justify spending $200 million on a movie that essentially sounds like a superhero adaptation of True Grit, though, makes sense.
The problem, though, could have been that they were attempting to move the character in the incorrect way. Due to the character's development in comic books, there are several directions the character might go in. The authors were eager to adapt some of the character's more humorous runs in light of current trends in comic book movies, but his plain, darker side also has a lot of promise.

Superman himself is one of Lobo's key enemies; he has been both one of Lobo's targets and a person who has attempted to thwart his goals. A showdown between Lobo and the new Superman may be a perfect way to introduce Lobo to the world before he splits out and gets his own storyline, even if we now know that Cavill won't be reprising the role.
Therefore, who could play Lobo? Dave Bautista is one actor who has expressed a desire to portray the Main Man. This prospect isn't too far-fetched given Bautista's previous collaborations with Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy, especially considering the fact that he was originally set to feature in Gunn's own The Suicide Squad. The Czarnian bounty hunter may be brought to life with the help of Bautista's skills since he possesses the physique and sense of humor necessary for the role.
