The first season of Quantum Leap has come to an end as the season finale officially airs on March 3rd. According to the synopsis, in this episode, Ben's next leap brings him closer to home than he could have imagined. The team also faces the ultimate showdown with Leaper X as they fight for the future of the Quantum Leap project and their lives. This finale leaves us hanging with a cliffhanger and so many more things to expect in Season 2.

#2. Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 18 Recap

In this episode, Ben finds himself land at the Los Angeles headquarters in 2051. The place is a total shambles as everything has been ruined during an apocalyptic event. While Ben is still trying to figure out the situation, he encounters the Future Ian.
It seems like Ian has already predicted that Ben would come to this place. In this future, Ian is the sole survivor of the project — everyone else has died.
Future Ian reveals the reason Martinez chases after Addison. It turns out that the United States government believes that Quantum Leap is responsible for the destruction of society. In order to protect humanity, they decide to completely eliminate the project. Therefore, they send Martinez back to murder Addison, the original leaper.

Future Ian shows Ben a safe code that they have been working on for 10 years. Ben only has a few seconds to remember it before leaping back to 2018 in his own body. That was the day Martinez murdered Addison.
Ben informs Addison that he is a time traveler, and he comes here to save her from the hand of Martinez, aka Leaper X. However, when Ben arrives at the headquarters, Addison points a gun at him. She suspects him to be the leaper who gets sent to murder her.

Ben belatedly realizes that Martinez has leaped into Magic's body. Ben, who is still suffering from memory loss, is unable to answer the team's questions about topics he should have known, whereas Martinez could effortlessly say the correct answers. This convinces everyone that Ben is lying about his identity. They lock Ben up in a cell.
Luckily, 2023 Magic comes in to speak with Ben and relays 2023 Jenn's message about "Turtle Time". This "Turtle Time" makes Jenn and Ian rush to the cell. Ian questions Ben about the code 2051 Ian shows him, which appears to be a cheat code.

Not long after his mission starts, Martinez figures out that killing Addison wouldn't solve the problems. Even if Addison died, the project would still get carried on by other team members. That's when Martinez's target turns to the whole team.
The quantum accelerator was destroyed after Martinez jumped. This means no one could leap anymore, and anyone who had already leaped could not return. Ben tries to inform Martinez about it while he is in the cell, pointing out that the U.S. government intends to abandon Martinez. However, to Ben's surprise, Martinez admits that it was actually his idea to destroy the accelerator. He has no plans to return home, and he willingly sacrifices himself for this mission.

Ben and Martinez gets into their final battle. They enter the quantum accelerator and are thrown back in time. They return to the places where their paths had crossed, one by one. Ben defends against Martinez by using everything he learns during his leaps.
While they are fighting each other, the duo are sent back to Salvation, the western town featured in Episode 5. When Ben is about to lose his life as Martinez holds a gun to his head, Miss Frankie suddenly appears and shoot Martinez dead.

Before getting into the fight with Martinez, Ben attempts to persuade Addison by using the Law of Entanglement metaphor. According to this law, any two entities who have shared an experience are bonded by it, so they don’t remain separate entities anymore.
Addison proposes that Past, Present, and Future Ian should work together at the same moment to enter the cheat code and reset Ben's leap. This code allows Ben to go back in time at any point, giving him a second opportunity.
After Ian inputs the code into the machine, Ben returns to 2018. He has finally completed his mission - everything has returned back to its original state, Addison is saved, and Martinez is not there anymore. He shares a kiss with Addison instead of taking her out on a date to push the start of their relationship to a next level.

Ben takes his next jump right after that. The crew waits for Ben to appear in the Quantum Leap accelerator, but the episode ends in a cliffhanger as it is revealed that Ben hasn't successfully returned home.
Showrunner Martin Gero shared with Entertainment Weekly about what might happen in Season 2: "The leaps in season 1 felt semi-planned because Ben was essentially trying to use celestial navigation to get where he needed to go. Now, he's just lost, much like Sam Beckett was. The path he's on is a lot more random or in the hands of whatever unknown force guides the Quantum Leap program."
Is Ben still alive? Does he get stuck in an another time? Will he be able to return home? We would have to wait until Season 2 to find out the answer.
