You season 4 has been full of surprises and twists, but none more shocking than the revelation that Joe’s new friend Rhys is not who he seems. In fact, he’s not even real. So, what is the truth, does Rhys have a twin?

#1. Who is Rhys?

Rhys is a character introduced in You season 4 as an author who is running for office in London. He meets Joe at a book signing and they bond over their shared love of literature and disdain for social media. Rhys invites Joe to join his campaign team and they become close friends. Rhys also helps Joe deal with his guilt over killing Love and his feelings for Marianne.
However, as the season progresses, we learn that Rhys is not as friendly as he appears. He reveals himself to be the Eat the Rich killer, a serial murderer who targets wealthy people and leaves behind messages like “Eat the Rich” and “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. He also tries to manipulate Joe into becoming his partner in crime and killing Marianne.

#2. Is Rhys real?

So, what is the truth, does Rhys have a twin? Well, the answer is no. As many fans had already theorised, Joe’s interactions with Rhys in You season 4 are all hallucinations. Rhys did exist but he never knew Joe personally. On top of that, Joe is the Eat the Rich killer.
The twist is revealed in episode 7 when Joe confronts Rhys at his campaign headquarters and discovers that he has been talking to himself all along. He also finds out that he has been leaving behind clues at his crime scenes that link him to Rhys’ books. It turns out that Joe has been suffering from dissociative identity disorder (DID) and created an alter ego based on Rhys to cope with his trauma.

#3. Why did Joe hallucinate Rhys?

Joe hallucinated Rhys because he was unable to accept his own dark impulses and actions. He needed someone else to blame for his murders and someone who could understand him and validate him. He also wanted to escape from his reality of being a father, a husband and a fugitive.
Rhys represented everything that Joe wanted to be: a successful writer, a charismatic leader and a rebel against the system. He also gave him an excuse to pursue Marianne without feeling guilty about Love or Henry. However, by creating this imaginary friend, Joe also put himself and everyone around him in danger.

#4. What happens next?

After realizing that he has been hallucinating Rhys, Joe decides to turn himself in and confess his crimes. However, before he can do so, he gets kidnapped by Theo Quinn’s friends who want revenge for Theo’s death. They torture him until Love shows up and rescues him.
Love then convinces Joe to run away with her and Henry instead of going to jail. She tells him that they can start over somewhere else as a family. However, on their way out of town, they get into a car accident caused by Marianne’s ex-husband Ryan who wants Henry back.
The season ends with a cliffhanger as we don’t know if anyone survived the crash or what will happen next.
