Countries That Have Won 2 Consecutive World Cup, Will France Be Next One?

The pinnacle of success for a national football team is to take home the World Cup trophy in their respective competition. This honor has only been bestowed upon a select few countries. Brazil is the only nation to have won the World Cup five times; Germany and Italy have each won four times, and Argentina, Uruguay, and France have each won the World Cup twice. Even though many of them made it to successive finals, they were not successfully defending their crowns the second time. Only two countries in the history of the World Cup have ever won back-to-back titles at the tournament. This article will analyze the countries that have won the World Cup multiple times in a row.

Italy – 1934, 1938

Italy is one of the most successful countries in the history of the World Cup, having won the tournament four times, which is one less than Brazil. The Azzurri have participated in 18 of the 22 editions of the World Cup, and they have made it to the finals on six separate occasions. Their most recent triumph occurred in 2006, and their most recent appearance was in 2014. Since then, Italy has been eliminated from the race to qualify for the World Cup in 2018 and 2022.
After competing in the World Cup for the first time in 1934, Italy became the first nation to win the tournament back-to-back for two consecutive years. They prevailed over Czechoslovakia in the championship match in Rome by a score of 2-1. The next year, in 1938, Italy successfully defended its championship, beating Hungary 4-2 in the final match played in France to become the first nation to defend the most prestigious award in football successfully. The game was managed at the time by Vittorio Pozzo.

Brazil – 1958, 1962

After that, Brazil's South American powerhouse accomplished this feat, led by the excellent Garrincha and the budding superstar Pele. In the championship match, the Selecao prevailed against Sweden, the tournament's host nation, by a score of 5-2. They successfully defended the cup in 1962 by prevailing over Czechoslovakia by a score of 2-1. Pele was the contest's hero once again.
There is no other team that can compete with Brazil's level of domination at the World Cup. They have never missed a World Cup competition, making them the team with the most prestige in this important competition. They have appeared in seven World Cup finals and won five.
