Carl And Dug Return In Up’s After Story, And Everything We Know About The New Pixar Short
Released back in 2008, 15 years later, Up is still one of the most iconic and well-loved Pixar animations ever, an everlasting symbol for the studio’s golden era with similar masterpieces such as Finding Nemo or Wall-E…Following the footstep of Carl, a cranky elderly who just lost his wife, the entire film is a roller coaster of emotion, from tear-jerking scenes like Carl and Ellie’s time together, or hysterical sequences that never fails to make us laugh out loud whenever Russell and Dug appear on the screen.
Of course, the 5-minute opening scene of Up always hits the hardest. It describes Carl’s bittersweet life with his beloved other, Ellie, who had been with him ever since they were little kids. Something in Carl’s heart had been missing ever since his wife’s passing until this day, but everything might change in the latest Pixar short. In the poster and recently released trailer, the protagonist looks ready to leave his past behind, and is preparing for a new date. Let’s see what lies in store for us in this new Pixar short through the newest trailer released by the studio.
#1. The new Pixar short will feature a new chapter in Carl’s life.
The short film is called Carl’s Date, which pretty much sums up the overall content. That doesn’t mean we aren’t excited to see it, though. Our protagonist has been struggling with moving on ever since Ellie’s passing, and even when he met Russell and the others, it still feels like something is yet to be fulfilled in his chest. But now, with a new date, it feels like Carl Fredricksen finally can leave his past behind, and enter a brand-new chapter of his life.
The film was initially planned to be included in Dug Days series on Disney+, which tells the daily adventure of Dug, one of the most loved characters in the original movie. It’s later delayed until 2023 to be the opening short film of Pixar’s Elemental, which is set to release in 3 days.
#2. Who’s Carl’s new date?
We’re glad to know Ed Asner is back as the protagonist of the short film, along with Dug, our favorite friendly canine. The name of the lucky woman who caught Carl’s eyes in the short is revealed, and she’s known as Ms. Meyer. According to the trailer, it seems like this Ms. Meyer is the one to make the first move, which leaves Carl stunned and not knowing what to do. However, we didn’t get to see her face in the trailer.
In the trailer, we can see how flustered the protagonist is, trying all sorts of ways to practice for the upcoming date. From ball dancing with Dug to buying gifts, or digging up flowers, it’s a rare and wholesome sight to see the stern and stoic Fredricksen struggle in such a simple matter, considering how he fought against a whole pack of aggressive dogs before to escape the Paradise Fall.
#3. Will Russell feature in the movie?
In the trailer, we can see Dug acting as Carl’s companion, trying his best to aid his owner to prepare for the big day, and even giving him some heartfelt pieces of advice. However, Russell remains to be seen.
Russell is one of the most beloved characters in the 2009 movie, who always knows how to brighten up the audience’s day with his vibrant personality and hilarious antics. He’s also one of the reasons that influence Carl to have a change of heart, making him more mellow and care more about others. While didn’t appear in the trailer, we’re all crossing our fingers, hoping to see our favorite boy scout make his entrance in the Pixar short.
#4. Up remains to be one of the most beloved movies of Pixar Animation.
Among its vast 26 feature films, Up remains to be one of the studio’s best, with its compelling story, charismatic characters, and beautiful soundtrack. The film tells the story of old man Carl Fredicksen, who tries to fulfill his promise with his deceased wife Ellie by flying to the mythical Paradise Falls, using his own house, with the help of thousands of balloons. Along the way, he meets Russell, a happy-go-lucky boy scout, Dug, a Golden Retriever who can communicate using a translator device, and Kevin, a strange South American ostrich-like creature.
Earning a record-breaking 98% Rotten Tomatoes score, Up was a huge box office success, which is critically acclaimed by both fans and critics alike. Grossing over $735 million worldwide, Up remains one of the most beloved animated Movies in the industry, attracting both children and adults to theaters and streaming services. The movie also received numerous Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Animated Feature in 2010.
