Caleb Lawrence McGillvary (also Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker) is an internet viral video featuring a hitchhiking man who calls himself "Kai". It was released on February 2, 2013, by a reporter from a local news station in California. The video went viral and received national attention in the press. Kai Lawrence, later identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary (b. September 3, 1988) from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, would cite the fall-out from the video as part of his defense against a homicide charge that was filed in New Jersey a few months after the video was released.

McGillvary gained some online fame in 2013 after intervening in an assault on a California utility worker who was threatened by a man with a hatchet. The jury deliberation spread over two days and a four-week trial before state Superior Court Judge Robert Kirsch.
According to Union County prosecutors, Clark Township police responded to Galfy's home on Starlight Drive to find the victim's partially clothed body prone beside his bed. Investigators said surveillance footage, digital cell phone data and other forms of evidence were used to identify McGillvary as a suspect.

Joseph Galfya is an American Lawyer, Partner of GALFY, TIMONI & RUBINO, specializing in the field of Civil and Criminal Trial Practice.
Investigators said McGillvary and Galfy first met in New York City's Times Square, about a day and a half before the victim's death. McGillvary claimed self-defense at trial, the county medical examiner testified that the victim - "who stood 5-foot-5, weighed 230 pounds, and had a stent in his chest due to a heart condition" - sustained numerous serious blunt-force injuries to his face, head, neck, chest, and arms, including three skull fractures, four broken ribs, and severe contusions, abrasions, and bleeding.
Prosecutors said the extent of injuries contradicted McGillvary's self-defense claim. They also said McGillvary cut his long hair and fled the state after the murder. Galfy had been a partner with the Rahway-based law firm of Kochanski, Baron and Galfy, PC, and was a military veteran who reached the rank of Major while serving in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1970.

While Kai did admit to killing Galfy, his version of events painted it as self-defense. Police interrogation footage shown in The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker sees Kai tell a pair of investigators that Galfy picked him up in Times Square, treated him to an Italian dinner, and offered to let him stay at his New Jersey home, which Kai accepted. When Kai woke up, he tells cops that he believed he was drugged and sexually assaulted in his sleep. On May 14, 2013, Kai posted the following message to his Facebook page.
“What would you do if you woke up with a groggy head, metallic taste in your mouth, in a strangers house… walked to the mirror and seen come dripping from the side of your face from your mouth, and started wretching, realizing that someone had drugged, raped and blown their fuckin load in you? what would you do?”
Kai told police that he did not retaliate, instead taking the train to Asbury Park, New Jersey, to meet a fan in the hopes of crashing with her. When the fan didn’t materialize, Kai called Galfy and asked if he could stay at his home again. That night, Kai says he awoke to the septuagenarian attempting to sexually assault him, and struck him repeatedly in the head with his hands and elbows, killing him.
