Trace Adkins has weathered a life marked by perilous moments — near-fatal accidents, a gunshot wound, and battles with alcoholism. The 60-year-old country star, known for his resilient Southern grit, reflects on his journey, stating, "It's been a wild ride, and I'm fortunate to still be here."
Born Tracy Darrell Adkins, his early years included hazardous work on an oil rig, surviving incidents like a bulldozer accident and an oil tank explosion. During his tenure on oil rigs, the towering 6'6" Adkins encountered a series of harrowing incidents. In 1982, a bulldozer mishap nearly cost him both legs, and within a year, a catastrophic oil tank explosion resulted in the crushing of his left leg.
The challenges continued as Hurricane Chantal struck in 1989, leaving Adkins stranded in the Gulf of Mexico with nine other workers. Adding to the list of adversities, he accidentally severed his pinky while attempting to open a bucket with a knife, miraculously having it reattached later on.
A gunshot by his second ex-wife Julie Curtis in 1994 led to emergency open-heart surgery, adding to his challenges. The bullet went through his heart and both lungs. He survived and chose not to press charges.
