Brigitte Stevens never starts her day alone. She is now accustomed to the lovely companion of a certain little friend every morning. That friend of hers is Issy-a rescue wombat.
“She was starving to death due to the state of her environment,” Stevens said to The Dodo. “I didn't even know if she was a girl or a boy, but I quickly had a feeling her name was Isabel.”
“We have a big sanctuary and I didn't want to leave Issy alone when she clearly wanted company,” Stevens explained. “So I decided to take her with me in a baby sling.”
“She knows when I go to put my shoes on that I am about to leave,” Stevens said. “She sits at my feet, sometimes twirling around with her head up, for me to pick her up to take her with.”
Wombats often shun humans, but when Issy came to the refuge, she was unusually calm and willing to let Stevens take care of her. “She acts like she has always lived here,” Stevens said.
“I love that she feels so safe with me,” Stevens said. “She just seems so grateful.”
The young wombat will never be hungry or lonely again since she will spend the remainder of her life at the refuge. She's overjoyed to have a place to call home and a cozy sling to call her own.
