The story opens in winter with a trail of blood on the ground and a broken window. Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is treating Joel's wounds and shouting "shut the f**k up!" as Joel demands she leave. Ellie's frustrated and walks up stairs, and tentatively puts her hand on a doorknob. She opens the door to a flashback of FEDRA's version of gym class, where she's bullied by Bethany (Ruby Lybbert). Back in the offices of Capt. Kwong (Terry Chen), Ellie explains that Bethany started it and that she has two paths ahead, one as a grunt and one as an officer.
She picks the high road and asks for her walkman back, and obeys a lights-out order. A stranger jumps in through the window and puts their hand over Ellie's mouth, but Riley (Storm Reid) saves her. The Last of Us episode 7 on HBO and HBO Max features Riley joining the Fireflies, which freaks Ellie out. Riley offers her a few hours of the best night of her life, but Ellie rejects it due to drills to learn how to kill Fireflies. Riley explains that a 40-something Firefly woman (likely Marlene) found her and asked her to enlist, and the two argue about the FEDRA/Firefly divide.

They exit through a window and find a fresh dead man, who left behind old-world booze and pills. Riley reminds Ellie that that that wasn't the first dead body she's ever seen because of her parents, and Ellie asks to hold Riley's gun. Riley hands her the sidearm, and Ellie wonders why Riley became a Firefly, and suggests that she's doing it because of some guy Riley's dating. They arrive at the mall, which is shuttered and shut down due to recent changes to the power grid. Riley turns on the lights in the mall, and Bella Ramsey's face is the kind of thing where you wonder if she's breathing fresh air for the first time ever.
Riley takes Ellie to the mall to show her the four wonders of the mall, including an escalator and a carousel. Ellie loves the escalator, and Riley wonders about the popularity of lingerie at a Victoria's Secret. They share the booze, and Riley talks about her decisions to be a Firefly. Ellie understands, and Riley says she's the one thing she missed from the FEDRA days. The Last of Us episode 7 on HBO and HBO Max follows Ellie and Riley as they visit a photo booth, an arcade, and a toy store.
Ellie is worried they have no coins to play games, but Riley explains that she worked on it for hours the previous day. Riley easily beats Ellie in their first round of Mortal Kombat II, and uses Milena's "Fatality" move. Ellie and Riley almost have a romantic moment, but Riley promises to bring her to Wonder 5, which is better than a water gun.

You know how no one in this universe can have anything nice? This is especially true of first love. The mall shenanigans of Ellie and Riley accidentally awaken an Infected. He attacks them while they are shopping for Halloween. Ellie initially believes they have killed him without a scratch, but a teary-eyed Riley reveals that they've both been bitten.
Riley outlines their two options: They can either kill themselves or wait it out and savor whatever time they have left together. “We can be all poetic and shit and lose our minds together,” Riley says on the brink of a breakdown.
The Last of Us doesn’t show what happens next, but it doesn’t really need to. In “Kin,” Ellie told Joel that everyone she ever loved has either left her or died. We can assume Riley fell into the latter category, which means that Ellie had to watch her first girlfriend turn into an Infected. Best case scenario? Ellie ran away from an infected Riley. Worst case? Ellis has previously revealed (in Episode 4) that she had to hurt somebody before. That someone is most likely Riley, and it’s a fair bet that she had to kill her first love herself.
