As a teenager, OP had a job in the "General Merchandise" section of a UK supermarket. They mainly put things on shelves and looked after the warehouse stuff, and they also learned how to use the cash register.

When things got busy, the checkout manager in OP's store would use the speaker to ask all the cashiers trained at the registers to come help until the lines got shorter.

Even though he heard an announcement for someone with a name like OP's, he paid no attention and kept working on his stock check in the warehouse.

After 20 minutes, when OP gets back to the shop floor, the checkout manager is mad. She says she called him to come and do something. OP says he didn't hear the call.
