Growing up can be tough. People often want you to be just like everyone else. Sadly, when you're a kid, being different can sometimes lead to bullying and getting unwanted attention. That's exactly what happened to William Gierke, a fourth-grader from Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, back in 2015.
Fourth-grader William Gierke was bullied by his classmates when he wore a pink shirt to support breast cancer awareness at school.

During an interview with TODAY'S TMJ4, William explained that his classmates questioned why he wore that shirt. "Because I like pink," the straightforward fourth-grader replied.

However, when the other kids in the class heard his response, they began to call him a "sissy."
To make William feel more at ease, Mr. Winter, his teacher, chose to wear a pink shirt to school every day for an entire week.

Dan Winter later shared, "It began as a way to ensure William's comfort at school." He added, "I want to be someone who helps him feel safe and supported."
Since being uploaded to YouTube, William and his teacher's story has garnered thousands and thousands of views.

Two students have come forward in the comments, praising Mr. Winter. One said, "I go to that school and know him; he is very nice." Another commented, "Aww!! How amazing. He was my 4th-grade teacher in 04-05. He's still amazing!"
This sweet 4th-grade memory is one that William will cherish forever. The tradition of pink shirts lives on! It's heartwarming to know that teachers like Mr. Winter exist.
