According to ABC News, the agents, accompanying Naomi Biden at the time, observed the suspects breaking a window of the parked and unoccupied SUV. In response, one of the agents discharged their service weapons. Fortunately, no one was reported to have been struck by the gunfire. The three suspects swiftly fled the scene in a red vehicle.

"During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck. The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units. There was no threat to any protectees and the incident is being investigated by the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service," said the Secret Service spokesperson.

The Secret Service promptly issued a regional bulletin to the Metropolitan Police Department to assist in locating the fleeing suspects. The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure for all police-involved incidents in Washington, D.C. On Monday evening, the department issued this statement regarding the investigation:

"Agents from the Force Investigation Team of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating a US Secret Service (USSS) agent-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, November 12, 2023, in the Georgetown neighborhood of the District.

The incident adds to the backdrop of rising crime rates in Washington, including a surge in carjackings and car thefts. The city has witnessed over 750 carjackings and more than 6,000 reports of stolen vehicles this year. The Secret Service did not identify any immediate threat to the protectees, and Naomi Biden is reported not to have witnessed the events unfold.

This episode comes amid heightened concerns about security and safety in the nation's capital, following other notable incidents involving public ps. Notably, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas was carjacked near the Capitol, also by 3 armed attackers, as per AP News' report, and there has been a general increase in violent crime, up by more than 40% compared to the previous year.

The Secret Service agent's response underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in the current environment of increased criminal activity in Washington, D.C. Further details about the investigation and the identities of the suspects are expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
