Poor Baby Chimp Had To Live Inside A Cardboard Box For Months Until She Got Rescued

Many wildlife conserving organizations emphasize that wild animals should not be kept indoors and raised as pets. Sadly, several hunters and black markets still harm them and trade and tame the little beasts, which leads to a handful of tragic stories like the one we're going to tell you.

In March 2018, a rescue team from Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection (LCRP), along with local police and authorities from the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), found the baby chimp in a supply shop in Kakata, Liberia, after getting an anonymous tip.

When rescuers spotted the baby chimp, she was sitting inside an old cardboard box and holding tight to the tattered, dirty cloth she was hugging — which she'd used to replace her mom. Her name was Chance, and she was about one year old.

Somebody had kept her as a pet for the past few months after her mom and family were eliminated (because the chimpanzee adults protected the young intensively). Because of the terrible trauma, Chance was petrified and ended up being left in a cardboard box in the corner of the shop.

During her time living there, the tiny chimp never received the love and the care she needed. Thus, after being rescued, Chance appeared scared and avoided being picked and held. In addition, she was very skinny, malnourished, and underdeveloped for her age, with a buildup of fluid in her head.

Once Chance got to the rehabilitation center at LCRP, a miracle happened. She progressed and recovered rapidly and became unbelievably resilient. Amazingly, she learned to laugh and smile for the first time.

Over the next several years, the caretakers at LCRP allowed Chance to meet the other young chimp orphans. Slowly but assuredly, she was integrated into their youngest nursery group and would never again be without chimpanzee family members.

In 2021, Chance could go to the forest every day with her chimp friends and caregivers. Now, she is the sweetest, funniest, energetic chimpanzee girl in the foster home.
