Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn’s final masterpiece with Marvel, will hit theaters in less than 2 weeks. With the newest release, there is much for fans to speculate about, from the fate of the remaining Guardians, Rocket’s origins, or new Peter Quill and Drax’s antics,…But what we’re most hyped about is the introduction of Marvel’s newest potential antagonist in the movie, Adam Warlock.
In the latest trailer of the much-anticipated sequel, Adam Warlock, portrayed by Will Poulter, has made his appearance, but not much is revealed about his powers. In the comics, being a cosmic entity, he is widely considered one of the most powerful characters in Marvel’s universe, which means The Guardians will have a tough time dealing with this bad boy. With the film coming in the next couple of days, it’s a good time to learn about the abilities of our latest villain and see how he will fare against other powerful superheroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

#1 Who is Adam Warlock in the comics?

Source: Marvel Comics

Originally introduced to fans in Fantastic Four Chapter 67 (1967), Warlock was known as “Him”, being an entity that was genetically engineered by Enclave, a group of scientists. Soon realizing their evil plan, the cosmic hero made an escape and wandered around to find his meaning in life. Along the way, Warlock encountered many superheroes such as Thor or Sif, and later was under the shelter of High Evolutionary, who entrusted him to protect the Soul Stone. The Perfect Man eventually gave his life during a fight, and his soul was trapped inside Soulworld, a dimension inside the Infinity Stone he protected. Later, Warlock was resurrected and fought alongside The Avengers to defeat Thanos in Marvel: Infinity Gauntlet.
Granted with the immense power from the Soul Stone on his forehead, Adam Warlock has a wide range of formidable abilities that makes him on par with some of Marvel’s best superheroes. In the comic, he has super strength, self-rejuvenation, super speed, flight, and so on. He can also absorb and release powerful cosmic energy and even other creatures’ soul. At one time, Warlock even wielded 6 Infinity Stones at once, making him one of the strongest beings in the entire universe.

#2 What can we expect from Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3?

With how strong Warlock is in the comics, don’t expect the Guardians’ trip in the sequel to be an easy one. That being said, there are 2 massive changes that Marvel has made to the new villain. First of all, in the post-credit of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Warlock was revealed to be a creation of Ayesha, High Priestess of the Sovereign, to get rid of Peter Quill & Co., which means a clash between the two is unavoidable. Secondly, with the Infinity Stones destroyed by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, it’s possible that Warlock’s abilities will be nerfed a bit, without the power of the Soul Stone. However, compared to the Guardians, Warlock is still a formidable enemy with or without the stone.
However, being an ally to The Avengers most of the time in the comic, it is possible that Adam Warlock can have a change of heart at the end of the movie. If this happens, not only the Guardians of the Galaxy but also The Avengers will have another powerful ally for themselves. But rest assured that Warlock won’t be switching sides anytime soon, not after he gives Quill and his comrades a good beating first.

#3 How will he fare against other Avengers?

With his mentioned above abilities, and with the possible inclusion of the Soul Stone, Adam Warlock can easily join the ranks of the strongest superheroes in the MCU, alongside Thor, Scarlet Witch, and Captain Marvel. If he got the chance to wield all 6 Infinity Stones like in the comics somehow, Warlock will have the potential to be the strongest Avenger there is. Let’s just hope Marvel won’t try to nerf him after switching sides or send him away for business as they did with Carol Danvers.

#4 Adam Warlock’s role can change the MCU forever.

In the comics, Warlock plays a crucial part in Marvel: Infinity Gauntlet, which was the inspiration for both Infinity War and Endgame, so we can expect big things from the cosmic hero in the near future. Especially, with both Thor and Scarlet Witch’s – two of the most powerful Avengers currently – fate in doubt, while Steve Rogers and Iron Man are already out of the scenes, the team is in dire need of a strong ally, and Warlock can fit the bill easily. And with Kang the Conqueror revealed to be the next big bad guy in the long run, having someone as powerful as Adam Warlock on the good side will help balance things out a bit.
In any case, if Marvel can give Adam Warlock a permanent role in the long term, the future of the MCU will be very exciting to see. For now, let’s wait for our cosmic hero’s debut in the final part of the Guardian of the Galaxy trilogy and see if he can meet the audience’s expectations.
