Following up the events in Entertainment District with Tengen and Upper Moon 6, Demon Slayer Season 3: Swordsmith Village, which was released earlier this summer, continues Tanjiro Kamado’s adventure to the mysterious swordsmith village to get Haganezuka to fix his blade. Here, Tanjiro, along with Love Pillar Mitsuri Kanroji and Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito, fights their way against Upper Moon 4 and 5 to protect the village.
The third season of the highly-anticipated anime ended last week with an emotional roller coaster of an ending. Nezuko Kamado, Tanjiro’s sister who got turned into a demon by Muzan, is revealed to be alive even after getting exposed to the sun, which is a twist that got people on their feet. Unlike other demons, who got killed by sunlight, even Muzan Kibutsuji himself, Nezuko is able to withstand it, and can even walk under the sun freely. How is she able to do it? Let’s find out now.
#1. About Demon Slayer: Swordsmiths Village Arc’s ending.
The ending follows the fierce battle between the Demon Slayer members and the Upper Moon 4 and 5, and see it to the end. Muichiro Tokito, who manages to activate his demon slayer mark, cut Gyokko down with ease, while Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya still struggle against Hantengu’s variants. Thanks to Love Pillar Misturi’s interference, the group can chase after the main body, and Nezuko, by sacrificing herself to get exposed in the sunlight, allows Tanjiro to slay the demon once and for all using his newfound sword, polished by Haganezuka.
Tanjiro, while weeping for Nezuko, finally finds out that his sister has somehow conquered the sun. All her burning marks caused by sunlight are gone, and she can now even speak a few simple lines, an incredible feat that not even Muzan Kibutsuji can do. The group reunites afterward, and they later say goodbye to the Swordsmith village with an ovation from all the villagers.
#2. How does Nezuko conquer the sun?
As we know, while demons are strong and immortal entities, they’re vulnerable to sunlight and die on contact. However, Nezuko doesn’t suffer the same fate, she can even walk freely under the sun now. In other words, she has truly become immortal, and few can actually do harm to her except Muzan Kibutsuji. Of course, fans are baffled by this sudden twist, and speculations are raised about how Tanjiro’s sister can withstand the sun.
Later in the final episode, we see Lady Tamayo writes a letter to Tanjiro, which describes Nezuko’s blood condition and give her own verdict. According to Tamayo’s research, Nezuko’s blood changes exponentially at an incredible rate, and it even helps turn a Muzan’s victim back into his human self. She even predicts that, if the change in her blood continues, Nezuko might be able to conquer the sun in the near future.
Through the microscope, we can see how her blood has two substances: red and blue. The blue substance, as some suggest, might be the element of the mythical Blue Spider Lilly flower that Muzan has long looking for. According to the villain, Blue Spider Lily has the power to negate the sun’s effect on the demon’s body, making them invulnerable to sunlight.
If the Blue Spider Lily element has been in Nezuko’s body all along, this could explain why she’s immune to sunlight. But how did she get the element? In Demon Slayer Season 1, during the fight against Rui, Tanjiro has a brief moment reminiscing his past, including a scene where his mother Kie shows him some Blue Spider Lily blooming on the ground.
It turns out, the mythical flower actually exists, and it grows right near Tanjiro’s house. Therefore, if the Blue Spider Lily was transferred into Nezuko’s body somehow as rations or medicine, this could be the most plausible reason for how she can conquer the sun.
#3. This twist makes Muzan’s failure even more ironic.
The anime’s ending also reveals more about Muzan Kibutsuji’s past as a human. It turns out, since the Heian era, Muzan was very sick and was predicted to not live past 20. A doctor gave him an experimental medicine, which presumably failed. An enraged Muzan killed the doctor, only to find himself getting better in the following days, but in return, making him vulnerable to sunlight, and need to consume human flesh to live. Since then, Muzan has been searching in vain for the Blue Spider Lily, a substance in the original medicine, creating thousands of demons and killing millions of people in the process.
Ironically, the very thing that Muzan has spent hundreds of years to find, can only be found near Tanjiro’s house, in the daylight, which makes it impossible for him to obtain. This, and the fact that Nezuko is able to conquer the sun thanks to the Blue Spider Lily, only makes the villain’s useless attempt even more ironic, as the very thing he despises, humans, are the key to his immortality all along.
Now that Tanjiro’s family is killed, there’s no one else who knows about the Blue Spider Lily for Muzan to get information from. And since the demon lord has also killed the doctor, the only person who knows about the secret recipe, it’s safe to say that Muzan can only blame himself for causing all the unnecessary trouble on his own.
When will Demon Slayer: Season 4 get released?
After the Swordsmith Village’s conclusion, the studio immediately announced that the 4th season, Pillar Training Arc, is under production. A short teaser and poster are also revealed, with the Stone Pillar Gyomei Himejima as the main man. The new season will most likely focus on one of the shortest arcs in the manga, which sees Tanjiro and others participate in a harsh training course operated by all the Pillars to awaken the demon slayer mark.
Apparently, there is no official release date for the new season yet, but since the Pillar training arc in the manga is relatively short, we can expect it to come out around the summer or winter of 2024. The arc will serve as the foundation for the ultimate Infinity Castle Arc, which will see Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps go all out to fight the final battle with Muzan Kibutsuji and his demon army.
