Pip, the protagonist of Great Expectations, becomes addicted to opium with the encouragement of Mr. Jaggers, his guardian. Jaggers tells Pip that opium is better than alcohol since it helps one drift away. Pip trusts Jaggers, and even though he has second thoughts about him, Jaggers proves to be more helpful than evil. While high on opium at a brothel, Pip sees a man he believes is Compeyson, a criminal from his past, who attacks him, mentioning something about Pip having something in his possession. Jaggers subsequently tells Pip that Compeyson and Magwitch were pals who stole people on the roads and discovered gold on one of their expeditions. Pip is confused about his connection to the gold, but there is more to be revealed.
Estella, who was engaged to Mr. Drummle, decides not to marry him after realizing his true nature. To punish her mother, she refuses to set a wedding date. Lady Havisham, trying to manipulate her daughter, suggests Herbert Pocket as a suitable match for Estella. However, Estella agrees to marry Herbert, tired of the life she has been leading in her adopted mother's home. She even considers harming herself. Havisham has no idea how to pull her daughter back from the match made with the decoy.
Joe, Pip's brother-in-law, comes to London to see him and finds him spiraling and becoming obsessed with becoming a rich merchant. Pip refuses to leave London and wants to marry Estella. Joe is worried but hopeful that Pip will eventually come back to him.
