Selecting a baby name might sound like a walk in the park, but trust me, it's trickier than you'd think. You've got to dodge names that bring back cringe-worthy memories or remind you of that kid who stomped on your favorite sneakers in fourth grade. Plus, there's the challenge of finding a name that both you and your partner can agree on.
It's not until you're eight months pregnant and still drawing blanks on what to call your soon-to-arrive bundle of joy that you realize just how many names you can't stand. So, it's no wonder many soon-to-be parents keep their chosen name under wraps. This way, you can sidestep all the unsolicited and often annoying name suggestions from well-meaning friends and family while you patiently await your baby's arrival. Believe me, everyone's got an opinion they're itching to share.
But what's even more aggravating is when you finally spill the beans to someone you thought was a confidant, and they go ahead and snag your chosen name for their own kid! Technically, no one "owns" a name, but seriously, it's just not cool. And that brings us to today's tale: a user who decided to have a little fun with her longtime bestie by giving her a fake baby name, one with a rather interesting meaning in Spanish. OP's close college friend married her husband's cousin, and they were both pregnant at a similar time.
Naturally, they shared a lot about their pregnancies, except baby names, as OP wanted to keep hers secret.
But Roxy kept asking OP about the baby names, and it became annoying. OP got tired of it and talked to her husband for advice. He came up with a "name" to give as an answer.
They ended up picking the name, and the OB/GYN confirmed it. OP thought about how she'd feel if she were in their place.
OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
As expected, this post went viral faster than a sneeze in a crowded room, and boy, did it catch everyone's attention! Here are some of the responses it received:
Super curious if Roxy and her husband ever accepted any part of the blame.
Seriously, who tries that hard to steal a baby name.
Oooh, good point.
It seems like Roxy's intentions were pretty obvious.
Could you even imagine? What were they thinking?
Tacky is the perfect word for this.
Sucks she tried to be so underhanded.
Really, quite the mental gymnastics they did to make themselves the victims.
It does border closely with "too good to be true", but still *fingers crossed*
Sounds like Roxy and her husband took out their embarrassment on OP.
Maybe their friendship isn't as close as OP implied.
Definitely a "her problem".
Oh, the karma on this is just too sweet.
OP eventually followed up with an edit.
And it may be a while until she and Roxy speak again.
