In 2019, the San Diego Center for Policy Initiatives conducted a survey that found that over 85% of survey participants are confronting irregular scheduling practices employed by employers, with that percentage increasing to "95% among food service, grocery, and retail workers."
According to the article, managers can amend the working schedule after it is posted, employees might be under extreme pressure to perform call-in shifts that aren't formally on their schedules, and employees can receive a schedule with less than two weeks' notice.
Ignoring demands from employees is another aspect of unpredictable scheduling. Employers frequently have the option of ignoring requests from staff members for schedule changes to accommodate their time in school or personal obligations. This can place those staff members in awkward and occasionally risky situations in terms of their academic performance, social interactions, and, in the worst cases, physical safety.
