We've known some TV characters like family over the years, so it's hard to adjust when a show no longer features our favorite stars. What can be the reason for TV characters to voluntarily leave their hit TV shows? Often, a TV show makes a particular actor more famous than the rest of the cast and it doesn’t necessarily have to be the protagonist. However, despite high ratings and critical praise, some celebrities quit stable jobs to focus on something else. #1 Nick Zano, Legends of Tomorrow

After joining "Legends of Tomorrow" in Season 2 as Nate Heywood, Zano left the CW series in the Season 7 finale, when his character lost his talent and returned to the totem to live with lover Zari 1.0.
#2 Lisa Edelstein, 9-1-1: Lone Star

Edelstein reappeared in the Feb. 28 episode, a Gwyn-centric hour that revealed additional facts about her and T.K.'s connection before her untimely death. The actress told TVLine that showrunner Tim Minear informed her of Gwyn's death, adding that Minear "wanted to use Gwyn's death as a way to strengthen the story and connection between Gwyn and T.K." To really see what she meant to him in her absence, which is sadly how many people learn to appreciate people they once loved.”
#3 Grown-ish Cast

In the season four finale, Francia Raisa (Ana), Emily Arlook (Nomi), Chloe Bailey (Jazz), Luka Sabbat (Luca), Halle Bailey (Sky), and Jordan Buhat (Vivek) all left the program. The characters have graduated from college and are embarking on a new chapter in their life.
#4 Miles Fowler, The Resident

Fowler, who joined "The Resident" as a series regular at the start of its fifth season, unexpectedly left the program in the March 29 episode. At the time of his departure, Fowler's rep told TVLine that he had only signed a one-year contract with the program.
#5 Thomas Cocquerel, Gilded Age

Sure, Tom Raikes shattered Marian Brook's heart in the first season finale of The Gilded Age, but we didn't anticipate him to disappear from the show entirely. Cocquerel, sadly, will not return for the HBO drama's second season.
#6 Ruby Stokes, Bridgerton

After two seasons as Francesca Bridgerton, the actress left to feature in Netflix's new show "Lockwood & Co." Hannah Dodd, from Anatomy of a Scandal, will take Ruby's position in season three.
#7 Charlotte Spencer, Sanditon

TVLine announced in May that Spencer, who portrayed Sanditon's Esther Babington, will not return for the show's third season, which is expected to premiere in 2023.
#8 Anthony Anderson, Law & Order

Anderson had only signed a one-year contract to reprise his role as Det. Kevin Bernard in NBC's Law & Order revival, but that didn't stop fans from being disappointed when it was revealed on May 19 that Anderson had really departed the program. His character made his final appearance in the Season 21 finale.
#9 Patricia Allison, Sex Education

Patricia Allison, who portrayed Ola on Netflix's Sex Education for three seasons, has announced her retirement in July 2022.
#10 Christiane Paul, FBI: International

In July, CBS confirmed that Paul, whose character, Katrin Jaeger, was promoted and said goodbye to the Fly Team in the Season 1 finale, will not return for Season 2 of the procedural drama. Eva-Jane Willis, who will soon be seen in Prime Video's thriller "The Power", has joined the cast as Paul's replacement.
#11 Kelli Giddish, Law & Order: SVU

Giddish, who joined SVU in Season 13 as Det. Amanda Rollins said in August that she will be leaving the NBC series during Season 24. NBC declined to comment on Rollins' departure in detail, but an SVU insider tells TVLine that the character would go through a traumatic event early in Season 24.
#12 Jordan Elsass, Superman & Lois

"For personal reasons, Jordan Elsass has notified the studio that he will not be returning to "Superman & Lois" for Season 3," producers Warner Bros. Television announced in a statement. Though the specifics of Elsass' departure are unknown, it is not said to be the consequence of a "workplace-related issue."
#13 Tanya Reynolds, Sex Education

Tanya Reynolds revealed in July that she will not be returning to "Sex Education" for season four. "I loved every second minute of it, and I loved Lily with my whole heart," she told the Radio Times in the United Kingdom. "Three seasons was just a really perfect amount for me."
#14 Alexis Bledel, The Handmaid's Tale

Bledel, who has played Emily on the Hulu drama since its debut in 2017, said in May that she will be leaving the show before Season 5: "After much thought," Bledel told Variety, "I felt I had to step away from "The Handmaid's Tale" at this time." “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
#15 Simone Ashley, Sex Education

Simone Ashley revealed in April that she will not be appearing in the fourth season of Netflix's Sex Education. "No," she answered on the BBC's Good Morning Britain. "I get asked that all the time, no."
But she has a valid reason: "I'm now a Bridgerton gal."
#16 Lina Enzo, S.W.A.T.

Esco revealed her departure from the CBS drama following its Season 5 finale, which served as her character Chris' send-off episode, calling it "one of the most painful decisions I've had to make."
#17 F. Murray Abraham, Mythic Quest

Six months after Apple TV+ renewed "Mythic Quest" for Seasons 3 and 4, Lionsgate revealed to VanityFair.com that Abraham will not return to his role as C.W. Longbottom.
#18 Jesse L. Martin, The Flash

After eight seasons on "The Flash", Jesse L. Martin confirmed his departure as a series regular in April 2022. The actor, who plays Captain Joe West on the DC superhero drama, is still set to appear as a guest star in the show's ninth season.
#19 Gavin Leatherwood, Sex Lives of College Girls

According to Us Weekly (and later verified by TVLine), Leatherwood will not return as Essex College student Nico Murray in the second season of the HBO Max comedy.
#20 Jorja Fox, CSI: Las Vegas

Simply over a month after CBS renewed CSI: Vegas for Season 2, Fox said that she will not return as Sara Sidle for Season 2, citing that "I personally just can't split Sara and Grissom up again."
Two days later, TVLine exclusively revealed that Mel Rodriguez, who portrayed Chief Medical Examiner Hugo Ramirez on the new CSI, was also leaving before Season 2.
#21 Richard Flood, Grey's Anatomy

Flood's almost three-season run as Grey Sloan's doc Cormac Hayes ended in early March, when Cormac decided to depart from Grey Sloan. “Having three years on the show felt right for me, and I think that the arc of the character with all the developments in the story was probably coming to its natural end, which was great. I was very happy that everybody felt the same.”
#22 Maia Mitchell, Good Trouble

Mitchell, who had played Callie since Good Trouble‘s first season, exited the Freeform series in Episode 2 of its fourth season. In a video Q&A with TVLine, Mitchell elaborated on her “personal decision” to leave Good Trouble, citing the difficulties of being away from her family in Australia during the COVID pandemic.
