Rescued animals often have unpleasant experiences before meeting kind staff members in the shelter. Therefore, they may find it hard to get used to the care and love from humans. While some could adapt to the new environment quickly, others need a few weeks to accustom themselves to the new home.
In the case of Opal, a little lamb in Edgar’s Mission, she had been through a tough time before accepting care and cuddles from rescuers.
“When Opal arrived, she was critical and very weak,” Pam Ahern, founder of Edgar’s Mission, shared. “And, like all babies, feeling the comforting embrace both calmed and protected her. You could feel her melt into your arms as she gave a little sigh letting the tension out of her body.”
“Unlike all the other little lambs who would swarm to our feet … little Opal did not,” Ahern remembered. “Her fear had overtaken her, and she would pitifully try and flee as best she could. Often falling over in her still weakened state. This almost broke our hearts.”
“I would nestle little Opal to her chest,” Ahern said. “She would tell her how special and brave she was, and that she had stolen all of our hearts. Little Opal loves hearing such soothing tones and blissfully closes her eyes whilst her sweet mouth seeks out the source of those words. And yes, it melts the hearts of all who witness this bond.”

The white lamb was mistaken for a rock covered with frost at the beginning. Luckily, rescuers realized and saved her. The center then gave her a check-up, and they learned that the animal was feeble. Because of being unfamiliar with human compassion, she had a bad temper towards caregivers at first. However, like any baby, she loved to melt in warm and gentle hugs.“When Opal arrived, she was critical and very weak,” Pam Ahern, founder of Edgar’s Mission, shared. “And, like all babies, feeling the comforting embrace both calmed and protected her. While most lambs were attached to people, Opal tried her best to avoid them. She escaped out of fear and often fell on her feet due to her weak condition. After many times trying to flee, her health seemed to deteriorate, which made the staff worried.“Unlike all the other little lambs who would swarm to our feet … little Opal did not,” Ahern remembered. “Her fear had overtaken her, and she would pitifully try and flee as best she could. However, with all love and patience, the rescuers’ sincere feelings have reached the little lamb. Eventually, Opal opened her heart to enjoy people’s care as much as possible. She liked pleasant words towards her from the caretakers, and she would shut her eyes while kissing them.“I would nestle little Opal to her chest,” Ahern said. “She would tell her how special and brave she was, and that she had stolen all of our hearts. Little Opal loves hearing such soothing tones and blissfully closes her eyes whilst her sweet mouth seeks out the source of those words. And yes, it melts the hearts of all who witness this bond.”
