Today, we wish to introduce little amigos from the sunbird clan. They have distinguished unique smooth fringe coats of red and green. Living mainly in Southern Asian tropical forests and big gardens, they are well-known by the name Crimson sunbirds (
Aethopyga siparaja).

These tiny flame-colored flying creatures are speedy and can leap into the air directly due to their short wings. Their main source of food is nectars. Besides, during mating season, they need additional protein. So they can put insects into their portions. Generally, with floaty, short, fast, and high-pitched calls, they are quite friendly and favorable.

Crimson sunbirds have curved-shape downward beaks to help them pick sweet nectars as well as catch some bugs and worms in the breeding season. The male ones are visually easy to spot by two dark-blue stripes under their bills. While their upper bodies are outstanding with the velvet rouge, their lower parts are often smokey green or grey.

Spending most of their life around the nests, the female ones aren't as colorful as the male ones. Also, the dullness helps them to disguise themselves from the predators. With soft coverings in a blend of greenish and yellowish, they can hide under leaves and branches.

Furthermore, they don't have to impress the male ones. Thus their toned-down coats aren't disadvantageous.

Crimson sunbird couples usually build their nest on short trees, low twigs, and sturdy fern fronds. They collect branches to form oval-shaped shelters for their eggs and nestlings.

Blessed with a long life span of about sixteen to twenty years, Crimson sunbirds remain in enough quantity to reproduce and are sorted to being Least Concern. We can admire their gorgeousness without any required conservation as long as we respect their living environment and prevent illegal exploitation of them.
