20 Relatable Comics of Retail Workers That Are Both Amusing and Annoying

Margot Nolan

A retail job can be extremely thankless if you have ever had one. Either the complaints “spitted out” from overbearing managers or silly questions from “weirdo” customers will lead you to the conclusion that it is time to find a better job. Never was it wrong to state “take your broken heart and turn it into art”. Let’s take a look at how Stephen Beals - the creator of “Adult Children Comics” - makes witty comics out of unpleasant feelings!
The inspiration from newspaper cartoonists has stimulated Stephen's interest in making his own comics since childhood. He truly respects every moment with his fellow creators whose sense of humor and love for cartooning are immortal. His dream is to contribute to the newspaper industry as a syndicated cartoonist. “The newspaper industry has shrunk to the size of a thimble,” he said.
Stephen Beals, whose illustrations are made to let off steam, described himself as an artist drawing comics “out of pure love for the art form”. His brainchild, “Adult Children Comics”, features everyday life situations working in the retail sector. Even if the humor-filled details of work-life are conveyed, most of us, more or less, can hear the characters' hopeless screams of tiredness.
The characters in these comics are the artist himself, who proudly declared to have “four usable” personalities. In the four-panel comic, retail workers - Penny and Tabby, known as a pair of siblings having a close-knit relationship with Harvey (named after Stephen’s grandfather) - encounter customers in a big-box store. Claremont (the dog) symbolizes Stephen at his best, whereas Harvey reflects Stephen's ego, Berle embodies his total affiliation, and Penny reflects his modest share of duty. Todd, an extra who portrays the artist's innocent side, is also present. At the same time, these illustrations are very identifiable!
