14 Plausible Fan Hypotheses About Nick Fury That Can Amaze You

Elise Feyrer

Nick Fury (played by iconic actor Samuel L. Jackson) is the primary architect of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the man in charge of assembling the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While superheroes like Iron Man and Captain America perform the majority of the combat, Fury works behind the scenes as a skilled spy to defend the world. Given his clandestine function, it's no surprise that Nick Fury's followers concoct some intriguing hypotheses about him.
According to one fan hypothesis, Fury already knows Thanos' snap is coming at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Other hypotheses assert that, contrary to popular thought, Fury possesses a superpower. Below are the 14 plausible fan hypotheses about Nick Fury that can amaze you.

1. The Reason Nick Fury AWaits To Reach Captain Marvel

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/inthewreckagebrother:
So one of the biggest points people raised about Captain Marvel was "Why didn't Fury call her during any of the other Movies when there were potentially world ending threats?" I think it's because last time she was there, he saw an alien war, and a bunch of spaceships tried to bomb the planet.
Fury just doesn't want to attract attention from the wrong people to Earth. Each time, he ps the Avengers can handle it, and he ps that's the safer bet. Also, let's remember that Fury has a habit of not trusting people, and he doesn't even know Captain Marvel that well.
Watching that end credits scene in Infinity War again, and Fury doesn't seem too worried about hearing of the Wakanda invasion. It's not until he sees people turning to dust that he realizes he's dealing with something a lot bigger and needs help.

2. Talos Switches With Nick Fury

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/fake_zack:
Part speculation, part theory. The post credit scene shows at some point in the past Talos has switched places with Nick Fury. Could’ve been fairy recently or could’ve been a while a go. Basically, I think it happened right in the middle Winter Soldier.
After Nick Fury is seemingly killed Talos and others come to earth and take Fury’s body into space. There he receives a similar treatment to Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Kree blood helps revive him. After being revived Fury decides to start forming the organization SWORD in space.
In the meantime Talos fills in for Fury in the second half of Winter Soldier forward in the MCU.

3. Nick Fury Knew What Will Happen In Infinity War

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/OJT6627:
I wanna recall the events of the Infinity War post-credits scene first. Nick Fury and Maria Hill are driving in a car, discussing the events happening in New York and Wakanda in the last hours. Then a car crashes in front of them, but there seems to be no one inside it.
Then helicopter crashes into the building and all around chaos erupts. Fury tells Maria to initiate Red Code alarm, and then Maria says "Nick, what's happening?" and turns into ashes while Fury watches...
Here comes the interesting part: Fury, without any hesitation or any significant change in facial emotions, runs towards a car (even shrugging off a random pedestrian on his way), takes the pager to call Captain Marvel and barely manages to send the signal before he dissolves as well saying, "Oh no. Motherf-!"
Thing is, the way Fury reacts to all of this, taking no hesitations in his actions and disappointingly noting how he was dying as well made me think of two possible things of why he behaved like that:
Nick Fury already saw something similar before and definitely knew someone (cough Captain Marvel cough) who could help in such situations, which can also give some explanation on why he didn't use Marvel's services during other end of the world class scenarios (like an alien invasion in first Avengers).
Someone warned Nick Fury of this situation happening sometime in the future and told him what exactly he should do. As for why Fury mentioned "Damn, motherf-" is probably that certain someone didn't tell him of him dying in the process or Fury just didn't know/expect it.

4. MJ Is Actually Nick Fury's Daughter

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/findmywallet:
In MCU timeline we haven't seen much of Fury since Age of Ultron. In Civil War, he jokes that his "wife" had kicked him out. This can be taken as sarcastic. But actually he's spent the past few years not only hiding but making sure his family is okay while he has been in hiding.
MJ is always creeping up on people. Like her dad, she's hysterically Shameless when it comes to inviting herself into other people's lives.
Many of her outfits are similar to Fury. Black coat. Black shirt. 1
In Homecoming, MJ's hair covers one eye.
MJ is observant. Notice she knows everything about Peter. As if she's keeping a file.
She literally profiles the people around her in her free time (she goes to detention to draw portraits of people).
"What are you hiding, Peter?" feels like a Fury line.

5. His Car Is Equipped By Stark's Tech

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/WeBlameGrayMarriage:
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury drives around in a black SUV with a lot of technological features.
Bulletproof armour, bulletproof glass, flight systems, a mini rocket launcher, an onboard computer that detects passenger health and calculates the failure point of the vehicle armor while keeping a sense of humor. And also a portable single-use laser that cuts through everything.
These are all features seen in the Iron Man suit. Bulletproof, flight capable, rocket munitions, JARVIS installed, laser cutter. Nick Furys vehicle is clearly based off Tony Stark's Iron Man technology.
Okay sure, that doesn't mean he stole it. Maybe Stark gave it to him, right?
Wrong. Tony Stark is not just a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, but also a man with style. This is what he calls a car. He would not put all his sweet gadgets in a boring black SUV. He would make Fury drive something cooler.

6. Nick Fury's Eye Scratch Gives Him A Special Ability

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/swayde620:
There has been some talk about Nick Fury and how he responded to the snap in the Infinity War post credit scene. Many believed he was too calm as if he knew it was coming...there were also theories about how Fury would lose his eye (until now).
In Captain Marvel, we see Goose the cat unexpectedly scratch Fury's eye which forces him to use the famous eye patch going forward.... In the movie, Goose swallows the Tesseract first then scratches Fury's eye.
My theory suggests that the scratch from the Tesseract infused Goose gave Fury some a degree of foresight. According to Wikipedia, the Space stone (from the comics) can grant its user Omnipotence (at full potential). Not only the scratch, but Fury has spent a lot of time with the Tesseract/Space stone. He had it from 1995 to 2012 (when Loki) stole it in Avengers...
This could also explain why Fury didnt call Carol sooner (to fight Loki, the Chitauri, or Ultron). He knew he wouldnt need her....Of course there's the big question about Hydra's infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. and how Fury didnt know about it.
My answer to that is that Hydra infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. soon after WW2 (Zola explains this in Winter Soldier). It's plausible that since the infiltration started before Fury got scratched/before he got involved with S.H.I.E.L.D., he couldn't see it coming.

7. Nick Fury Indeed Has A Super Power

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/Burnnoticelover:
In season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson says that there are no clairvoyants that S.H.I.E.L.D. is aware of. Interesting, seeing as how they are headed by one.
What?
Yes. I think that Fury has precognition. If you look at him, he is Batman levels of prepared, he has a backup for every eventuality (secret bunkers in case of infiltration, programs to bring back the dead, even a f*cking helicarrier stored in his back pocket).
No one could ever be prepared for those things, no one would divert resources towards a series of bunkers that only a select few knew about, and secret helicarriers. Unless they saw it coming. So i think Nick can see the future.
Why doesn't he admit it?
Simple. He's seen how S.H.I.E.L.D. treats superpowered individuals, he's seen the government's distrust of "gifted" people. Imagine if it came out that the man in charge of controlling superpowered people is superpowered himself.

8. Nick Fury Intentionally Makes Conflict

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/Spatula151:
My theory suggests that Nick from MCU purposely sows chaos (albeit chaotic good) in attempt to surface and pop all bubbles that are hazards to Earth and humanity. He goes from solid good guy to questioning everything, only putting one foot in the water at all times.
The internal conflict with his own government and the Kree/Skrull deception turns him, and from that point on his motives are set: he aims to assemble the best humanity has to offer (super or otherwise) in an attempt to protect humanity’s interests.
However, he does this knowing the rift it will cause: supers coming out public, new sentient alien life forms, but above all else, it attracts evil that lies dormant. S.H.I.E.L.D. to its affiliates see it as just that, a protective barrier.
While this seems extremely heroic, Fury sees S.H.I.E.L.D. as the device to bring forth any whom plot against us. Since setting S.H.I.E.L.D. in motion, the tools humans have had at their disposal have increased exponentially due to alien tech and some of the most genius minds, whether good or evil.
This was all part of Fury’s plan: create a “good guy” team, trust no one, defeat threats, use all tech after the fact, then rinse and repeat. We all know Fury is the ultimate spy and much of my speculation is already accepted as fact, I feel my theory varies in that his motivation almost parallels Thanos in many ways which could make himself seem villainous at times.

9. In 'Age Of Ultron', Nick Fury Did TimeTravel

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/splingles:
I rewatched Avengers: Age of Ultron recently, and came across an odd bit of dialogue that really stuck out in light of events in Avengers: Infinity War and rumors about Avengers 4.
When Nick Fury drops in on the Avengers at the farm, he does two things: he tries to talk Tony Stark into dropping his efforts into making super robots, and he gives the whole team a pep talk and starts the conversation that eventually leads to the creation of Vision.
With the hint/common theory that time travel is somehow involved in Avengers 4, it got me thinking: what if this was a future or past version of Nick Fury, dropping in on a crucial point to interfere with history, or to shepherd events in a particular direction?

10. In The MCU's 'Star Wars', Nick Fury Played Mace Windu

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/Thefishman:
So basically, in Far From Home, Fury, (played by Samuel L. Jackson, who also played Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequels) makes a Star Wars reference. Specifically, he says,
"you wouldn't get that cause it's not a Star Wars reference."
This is seen by most as a fun reference to Peter's idea from Civil War in which Peter uses the rebels tactics to defeat an enlarged Ant-Man.
This reference, combined with a various appearances of the Death Star and other references to Star Wars throughout the MCU.

11. Nick Fury Has A Peer

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/hockeytalkie:
No franchise does cohesiveness like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it's already been confirmed that Marvel Studios' various Disney+ series' will tie-in to future MCU films, it's also very likely that there will be something that ties each of the shows together.
And I think that will be Jennifer Walters, also known as She-Hulk.
As a lawyer who specializes in representing superhumans, Walters has an obvious "in" to all of the other Disney+ characters' lives. She's perfect for cameo appearances, popping into each series to offer legal advice or defend someone in court, and each time she shows up could establish more details about her background.
In other words, there's a good reason that 'She-Hulk' is scheduled to be the last Disney+ MCU show to hit the air - and it's because Jennifer Walters will be busy in other characters' series until then.

12. Nick Fury Wears Black To Caress His Cat

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/schoolboyhueue:
Captain Marvel takes place in 1995. It is then that Fury encounters Goose. The next time we see Fury in that famous Iron Man post-credit scene, which takes place in 2008. He is clad in all black, and is noticeably cat-less during his exchange with Tony. Now, some quick googling tells me that the average lifespan of a cat is about 13-17 years.
Goose appears to be fully grown, so she could obviously be any age, but cats are fully grown within about a year, so she could conceivably be as young as 1 year old in 1995. Given the average cat lifespan, she would be nearing her expiration date around 2008.
Given the adoration he demonstrated for the cat, it wouldn't be too outlandish to assume Fury would keep her as a pet throughout the next 13 years.
In Captain America: Winter Soldier, Fury says the last time he trusted someone, he lost an eye. With the death of Goose comes death of trust. He is unable to open his heart to anybody again. He is trapped in a perpetual state of grief, as he is unable to move on from the tragedy, and that is demonstrated through his wardrobe.
I know, Goose is a flerken, not a cat. While possessing the physical characteristics of a cat, however, she may also possess its mortal characteristics as well, since aging is essentially a cellular (i.e. physical) process.

13. Nicky Fury Is Burst Into An Alternate Universe

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/Enervata:
Everyone is obsessed with "undo-ing" the snap. What if they don't? What if instead Thanos didn't actually wipe out half the universe's inhabitants with the snap, but instead created an alternate universe and tossed half the occupants into this other universe via the "dusting." And this alternate universe is the one that Marvel moves forward with in the future. What if the people who lived at the end of Infinity War are actually the ones who get left behind?

14. Nick Fury Attends Tony Stark's Funeral

Source: Marvel Studio

From Redditor /u/LunarTsunami:
I decided to rewatch Endgame today and as I was watching Tony Stark’s death scene I spotted something.
If you look over Stark’s right shoulder as it’s panning up you can see something in the background at first I thought it was a bit of debris I looked closer and now I think it’s Nick Fury wearing a black jacket leaning on more debris then the scene switches to Cap and Thor sad. ( I think it’s Nick Fury because I can faintly see an eyepatch.)
Now with me not knowing much about the MCU this could be the real Nick Fury not the Skrull Fury and it could be the point where Nick Fury and Skrull Fury switch places, So Skrull Fury is the one at Stark’s funeral while the real Nick Fury is vacationing on the Skrull ship because Nick Fury wouldn’t have missed Stark’s funeral unless just maybe he had already seen him go.
