Jim Carrey harshly criticized the behavior of his colleagues at Oscar Night 2022.
The moment Will Smith was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor with King Richard, the audience gave the actor a warm standing ovation. It was a totally inappropriate tribute according to Carrey, since less than an hour earlier Smith had become the protagonist of the event in which he took the stage to slap Chris Rock on live worldwide television. Interviewed by a CBS reporter, Jim Carrey explained his point of view on the thorny issue.
“I was sickened,” he said. “I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.”
“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous,” the actor continued. “That insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter [that’s fine]. But you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
At the end of the speech, Carrey then commented on the opinion of some according to which Will Smith's reaction may have been justifiable.
In the last few hours, Richard Williams and Sabrina Williams - father and older sister of the famous tennis players Venus and Serena Williams - have also expressed themselves with strong words of criticism towards Smith, who won the Oscar playing Richard Williams.
As for Jim Carrey, we will see him again soon on the big screen in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which will land in theaters on April 8th.

Carrey then expressed his indignation about the incident and added that in his opinion, Smith should have been escorted out of the hall where the ceremony was taking place immediately after the hit.“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous,” the actor continued. “That insult is gonna last a very long time. “[The slap] came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated. I wish him the best. I have nothing against Will Smith. He’s done great things, but that was not a good moment. It cast a shadow over everyone’s shining moment last night… It was a selfish moment,” the actor added. In the last few hours, Richard Williams and Sabrina Williams - father and older sister of the famous tennis players Venus and Serena Williams - have also expressed themselves with strong words of criticism towards Smith, who won the Oscar playing Richard Williams.
