The acclaimed Joker incarnation brought by Joaquin Phoenix may be back on the big screen soon.
According to reports from Heroic Hollywood, Warner Bros. would have already received the first draft of the script for the project and intended to start filming in the course of 2023. Notably, director Todd Phillips seems to be working on the writing and if nothing changes, he will soon go back behind the camera again.
As for Phoenix, the actor therefore will return to portray failed comedian Arthur Fleck who later became the Joker, a role that earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2020. Further details on the plot and new characters involved at the moment are kept under lock and key.
"So it would be possible to have not dueling Jokers but someone that says to be the Joker that isn't the Joker," he said. "And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did."
With "Joker" (2019), Todd Phillips and Scott Silver set themselves the goal of creating an alternative origin story of the well-known DC Universe villain, using him as a tool to address social issues such as the consequences of childhood trauma, the perception of mental illness, and the degeneration that can lead to social exclusion in those who suffer from it.
"Joker" was conceived as a stand-alone work set in its own universe. However, Phillips has always kept fans' hope for a sequel alive by alluding to ideas to discuss with Joaquin Phoenix and at the same time, effectively leaving the door open to every possibility.
