Regardless matter what critics claim, Eternals, the next addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has created quite a buzz among viewers. They are eternal beings created by Arishem (also known as Arishem the Judge in Marvel Comics), the primordial and enormous supreme Celestial entity who is credited with creating the very first star and bringing light into the world.
The Eternals come to suspect Arishem throughout the movie, doubting the ancient Celestial and finally rejecting to sacrifice mankind in order to create another Celestial with the Emergence. The Eternals were victorious, but only if they can unite their essences and powers into single energy known as the Uni-Mind. But what is the Uni-Mind, and how does Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) realize that they can unite their essences into one type of entity so smoothly?
The Uni-Mind is the most amazing talent bestowed to the Eternals by the ancient celestials, allowing them to unite physically and intellectually into a celestial-level mighty creature. During times of crisis, the Eternals might unite to form this supreme mind endowed with almighty abilities.
Nate Moore, a producer at Marvel Studios, elaborated. “The Uni-Mind is a concept that was borrowed from Jack Kirby’s run in 1976. It allows the Eternals to amplify the power of any single Eternal. However, they all have to be somewhat connected to do so. So, they can’t be on opposite sides of the world and create a Uni-Mind. They have to be in proximity to each other. It is an amplification device, but it does require the power of all the Eternals together.”
In the comics, the Uni-Mind is formed by at least three Eternals, with the Prime Eternal establishing the link and managing the construct. Indeed, in the film, we see Sersi, Druig, and Makkari conducting the Uni-Mind link, with Sersi as the primary link.
The Uni-Mind has the ability to repair and restore the power of every Eternal. In the comics, for example, Sersi, Thena, Makkari, and Druig are healed by the Uni-Mind after being injured while in human form during a gathering on Earth. The physical aspect of the Uni-Mind is represented badly in the film, with Sersi developing an entirely cerebral relationship with it. The Uni-Mind is typically shown as an ethereal humanoid with pure energy limbs, head, and body.
A celestial is created by generating a Uni-Mind from the lifeform of a planet and absorbing its core until it is annihilated. The film depicts the appearance of the celestial Tiamut, who attempts to "judge" Earth but is halted by the Eternals' Uni-Mind. Because they are celestial creatures, their Uni-Minds are capable of confronting battle against a celestial's Uni-Mind. Furthermore, the Eternals are not the only ones capable of forming a Uni-Mind. In the comics, the Deviant Ghaur creates his own Uni-Mind with the help of other creatures. We can only wait to see how or if the MCU will include a Uni-Mind conflict between Eternals and other entities into their films, or the revelation that celestials are nothing more than Uni-Minds.
