Time and time again, Spider-Man proves to be one of the most well-known and beloved superheroes in Marvel history. From Stan Lee & Steve Ditko’s comic pages to the big screen, from the Sony film trilogy to his adventure in the MCU, the friendly neighborhood is everywhere, and is always received the warm welcome of the audience. Our Spidey even spread his web to the video game department, as the 2018 title by Insomniac Games, Marvel’s Spider-Man was a critically acclaimed one, and is played by millions around the world. The spin-off released two years later, which introduced Miles Morales into the action, is also widely loved by Marvel fans.
After waiting for three more years, finally we can get our hands on the long-awaited sequel, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is set to release this October. The gameplay trailer released two months ago got fans on their feet with new intriguing gameplay mechanics including the Symbiote, and today, the story trailer follows with some exciting news regarding the plot of the game to build up the hype even more. Let’s dive right in, and see for ourselves what the new trailer got in store for us.
#1. Harry Osborn is the new Venom.
Departing from the original comics, Insomniac has taken the liberty to replace Eddie Brock with Harry Osborn, Norman Osborn’s son and Peter’s best friend, as the new host for Venom. As we know from the first game, Harry is terminally ill due to an unknown and deadly disease, and Norman has no choice but to fuse him with the Symbiote to prolong his life.
The experiment pays off, and Harry’s health gets better. Now, with the newfound power in hand, Harry wants to “heal the world” using it, and asks Peter to join alongside him. However, this line doesn’t age well, as he turns into Venom and wreaks havoc on the city later in the trailer.
#2. All the protagonists undergo a massive outlook overhaul.
The events in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 take place sometime after the first, so Insomniac has taken this chance to give Peter, Miles, and Mary Jane a huge appearance upgrade. As we can see in the trailer, Peter and his girlfriend, Mary Jane looks much older than the first game, and their hairstyles also change for the better. Miles, on the other hand, looks almost as tall as Pete now, and has nice dreadlocks to boot.
The new outlook change from the characters sits quite well with fans, as there have been some complaints about Peter and MJ’s face in the 2018 prequel.
#3. Venom’s official design is revealed.
At the end of the trailer, we can have a full first look at Venom, who is busy taking down an aircraft. His design is pretty similar to the counterpart in Tom Hardy’s Sony series, but with a big arachnid logo on his front and back. The trailer also sees the iconic Spider-Man villain fight against the army of Kraven the Hunter, who’s obviously not in New York to make friends.
With Harry revealed to be the new Venom, it’s no doubt that Peter’ll have to fight his best friend at some point in the game.
#4. Martin Li/Mr. Negative will be back.
Marvel’s Spider-Man features numerous villains, and Martin Li is the one that gives us mixed feelings the most. Li is the founder and owner of F.E.A.S.T, an organization that shelters homeless people, and is shown to be a good and kind man. However, he’s also Mister Negative, the ruthless leader of the Demon who has the ability to manipulate negative energy. Along with his army, Li works in the shadow to take down Norman Osborn, who he deems responsible for his parent’s death and his paranormal ability, and terrorize the city. At the end of the first game, he is defeated by Spider-Man and is put into the Raft.
In the story trailer, we can see that the Raft has been destroyed once again, letting the prisoners run wild. Here, Peter reencounters Li, who looks much older and even grows a beard. Miles, whose father was killed in an explosion caused by the Demons, claims that Li “took everything from him,” which implies that a rematch between the two might ensue in the game. Although, since Li is a good person at heart, fans hope that he might have a redemption arc later on in the story.
#5. Miles might have to fight Peter at one point.
As shown in the first trailer and the story trailer, Peter Parker becomes the host of the Symbiote at one point in the story. The Symbiote’s influence turns the kind and mild-mannered protagonist into a much more aggressive and obnoxious version of himself. His condition seems to be much worse in the story trailer, as even MJ is afraid of him, stating “he’s not himself”, and asks Miles to save Peter.
However, the Symbiote wouldn’t leave Peter’s body that easily, so we might get to see for the first time ever, a fight between two Spider-Man: Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The theory is already spread like wildfire on the internet, as everyone is hoping to see this fight coming true to see who’s the most powerful Web-Slinger ever.
