20 No Context Images Able To Make You Squirm

Larry Campbell

Our understanding and interpretation of every piece of visual information we come upon is shaped by context. Context for images can take many different forms, such as supplemental text, related images, and even audience cultural familiarity. Context is essential to understanding meaning, and it might be lost, distorted, forgotten, or absent. Some of the missing information can be retrieved by looking into the context of an image.
We certainly live in a time of misinformation and deceit. Both academics and the media agree that text-based material found online and in the news must be carefully evaluated. Images, however, infrequently receive the same kind of attention. Discussions about the intentional editing of images, or content manipulation, tend to concentrate on photographs. But, missing or misleading context can just as easily distort how images are understood, even when it is unintentional.
