11 Celebs Who Pay Tribute To Legendary Stars By Recreating Outfits

Jessica Wilson

History has a way of repeating itself, and designers and stylists frequently turn to the past for inspiration when dressing celebrities for red carpet events. It's no wonder that we've witnessed iconic Hollywood outfits being resurrected and gracefully donned by other stars.

From the elegant suit of Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn’s bold dress, seeing them reimagined on the modern stage brings a delightful sense of nostalgia. Recreating these legendary outfits is a way to pay homage to great actors and their iconic movie characters. After all, the combination of past and present on the red carpet is a captivating sight to enjoy.

We’ve rounded up the looks of some Hollywood stars that put on certain outfits for the first time and those who recreated them to choose who wore them better. But, it’s hard to say the name of the winner.

#1. Aretha Franklin (1976) and H.E.R. (2022)

In 1976, legendary singer Aretha Franklin wore a bright yellow dress with a cape and glitter to receive an American Music Award. In 2022, singer H.E.R wore another which looked almost like Aretha’s.

#2. Marilyn Monroe (1962) and Kim Kardashian (2022)

At the 2022 Met Gala, everyone couldn’t take their eyes off Kim Kardashian’s dress, which turned out to be the famous Monroe dress. After the event, she dressed up another from the blonde star. It was a green dress by Norman Norell that Monroe wore for the Golden Globe in 1962.

#3. Marilyn Monroe (1953) and Jessica Chastain (2015)

The bronze Atelier Versace dress Jessica Chastain wore to the 2015 Golden Globe Awards was most likely inspired by the dress of Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”.

#4. Björk (2001) and Laura Dern (2021)

Remember the swan-like dress Björk wore at the 2001 Oscars? It is the inspiration to create the feather dress Laura Dern wore at the 2021 Oscars. However, it had a little difference. Laura Dern’s dress consisted of 2 parts: a black turtleneck at the top and a white ostrich feather skirt at the bottom.

#5. Whitney Houston (1987) and Sarah Jessica Parker (2008)

Whitney Houston looked so stunning in a white dress with big gold hibiscus flowers on her shoulder. Her image appeared on the cover of Life. 2 decades later, Sarah Jessica Parker put on a mini dress that looked almost similar to Houston’s when filming in Sex and the City.

#6. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston (1998) - Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion (2022)

Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston wore absolutely similar Vera Wang dresses at the 1998 MTV VMAs. Over 2 decades later, Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion appeared in the same look, putting on Versace dresses.

#7. Gillian Anderson (2001) and Hailey Bieber (2019)

Hailey Bieber’s Met Gala dress is a reminiscence of the dress Gillian Anderson wore at a party in 2001. These dresses are bold, closing at the front but opening at the back.

#8. Jennifer Garner (2004) and Ariana Grande (2021)

Ariana Grande appeared in The Voice in a colorful vintage dress. The Versace was noticeable after Jennifer Garner put it on in the romantic comedy 13 Going On 30.

#9. Sharon Stone (1998) and Zendaya (2022)

Zendaya chose a short Valentino blouse and a long sequined skirt for the 2022 Oscars. The bold outfit reminds us of Sharon Stone, who wore a similar look at the 1998 Oscars. However, at that time, people laughed at her outfits and said her mass-market shirt was borrowed from her husband.

#10. Kate Hudson (2003) and Scarlett Johansson (2004)

In the 2003 movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Kate Hudson looked so charming in a silk yellow dress. The look became iconic. One year later, actress Scarlett Johansson wore the same one from Calvin Klein at the Met Gala.

#11. Audrey Hepburn (1954) and Saniyya Sidney (2022)

Saniyya Sidney came to the 2022 Oscars in an Armani Privé dress with floral appliqués. This dress was inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s in Sabrina. Saniyya acclaimed that Audrey was a fashion icon for her.
