American Music Awards: Chris Brown Was Booed By The Audience When He Won The Cup

American Music Awards took place in LA on Sunday night, and the ceremony did not escape controversy. Chris Brown took home a win at the 2022 AMAs, prompting boos from the crowd and a declaration of support from presenter Kelly Rowland. The "Forever" singer, 33, won favorite male R&B artist against Brent Faiyaz, Giveno, Lucky Daye, and The Weeknd on Sunday night. However, he was not present to claim his prize.
When Rowland introduced Brown as the winner of the category, there were loud boos among the cheers. The musician has a lengthy judicial past, including many arrests for assault and rape allegations, which he has denied. As Rowland, 41, said she would accept the award on Brown's behalf, she made a point to hold a finger up to the booing crowd, saying, "Excuse me. Chill out."

Brown has been a divisive p ever since he pleaded guilty to assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. He did not attend Sunday's AMAs after a planned tribute to Michael Jackson was canceled at the last minute. Rowland, accepting the award on his behalf, seemed surprised by the audience's reaction. Rowland then continued: "But I wanted to tell Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music and I want to tell him to thank you for being an incredible performer. "I'll take this award and bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations. And congratulations to all the nominees in this category."
The win came one day after Brown shared a lengthy video on Instagram that featured him rehearsing for a performance largely set to music by Michael Jackson.

Brown had been due to honor the 40th anniversary of Michael Jackson's blockbuster Thriller album at Sunday's ceremony in LA. Performing hits: Beat It, Billie Jean, Wanna Be Starting Something, and Thriller. No reason for the cancellation. Brown himself was taken aback, posting a video of his rehearsal with the caption: "U serious?". "Would've been the biggest AMA performance but they canceled me for reasons unknown," he added in the comments.
