The opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup will take place on November 21. Let's take a look at some of the odds-on favorites to take home the trophy from the competition in Qatar.

For Argentina, is this it? In what would likely be his final World Cup participation, Messi may cement his place in history by leading Argentina to victory. With their 3-0 Finalissima victory over Italy in 2022, Lionel Scaloni's Argentina is currently riding a 32-game unbeaten streak, which is only five games short of the record.
In 1986, with Diego Maradona as captain, Argentina won the World Cup for the last time. Messi will try to emulate this success by performing at his best in the championship game. Veterans like Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi may be the key to Argentina winning the World Cup again.

4. Spain

Since Luis Enrique took over as coach, Spain's fortunes have improved, and the country is now considered a serious contender for the World Cup trophy. Spaniards are confident in their chances thanks to the emergence of talented young players like Barcelona's Pedri, Gavi, and Ferran Torres at the international level, as well as the leadership of Rodri and the experience of Jordi Alba in defense and the middle.

3. England

After a string of strong showings in the UEFA Nations League, England has everyone's attention in Qatar this year. When 2019 was over, they had placed third. Later, in 2020, they came in second place at the UEFA European Championship, losing in overtime to Italy before ultimately losing on penalties.
The squad is potentially devastating, given the personnel they have available and their level of expertise. Only three goals separate Harry Kane from tying Wayne Rooney for the record of most goals scored in a single national team's history. Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka, all in their twenties, would be gunning for hardware.

2. France

Seven of the 22 players on France's World Cup roster—Adrien Truffert, Benoit Badiashile, Willaim Saliba, Wesley Fofana, Kolo Muani, Aurelian Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga—made their professional debuts after the 2018 tournament.
There is a wealth of young talent on this team, and the veterans like Hugo Lloris, Antoine Griezmann, and Paul Pogba provide invaluable experience. Even though Karim Benzema wasn't on the roster in 2018, he's a virtual lock to make a comeback. Benzema won the UEFA Player of the Year award after helping Real Madrid win the Champions League last year.

1. Brazil

Three Brazilian superstars—Gabriel Jesus, Neymar, and Vinicius Junior—have had a phenomenal season thus far. With players like Phillipe Coutinho, Lucas Paquetá, Rafinha, and Antony, Brazil will be terrifying in the future. Since Tito took over as coach, Brazil has developed a formidable backline that includes Alisson, the seasoned Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Casemiro, and Fabinho.
