Top 10 Funniest Non-Comedies Films, According To Reddit

Jessica Wilson

It is common now that many drama films include brief humorous moments to keep things from becoming too heavy for the duration of the film, which is also a reflection of how things are in real life. After all, people can rely on their sense of humor to bring relief during difficult circumstances.

And therefore, some of the best dramas are disguised comedies. With a little discernment, it's easy to understand that comedy and conflict are two sides of the same coin. Comedy serves tragedy and vice-versa, and films that connect the two are intellectual wet dreams. And as a result, there will be a great deal of unintentionally humorous movies. The Room, for example, where poor execution turned serious Movies into a laughingstock, is one of the greatest examples.

These movies, between a violent mafia picture, a serial killer thriller, and a drama about the most aggressive prisoner, are hilarious. They are the greatest examples of how, whether on purpose or accidentally, non-comedic movies can be highly entertaining. Let's check them out!

#1 American Psycho (2000)

When it comes to the top thrillers of all time, the 2000 film American Psycho is unquestionably one of the best, as even the off-screen violence gets under viewers' skin with the horrifying sounds. However, Huevos__Rancheros remembers the spooky thriller as curiously comical, remarking, "Some of the s*** Patrick Bateman says is hilarious because of Christian Bale's delivery of the lines."

It's almost comedic because the film is about New York yuppie Patrick Bateman (Bale) in the 1980s who gets truly enraged if one of his peers has a better-looking business automobile than him. Furthermore, Bale's deadpan delivery adds to the absurdity of it all, especially when his alibi is always the same "returning videotapes," even at the midnight.

#2 Bronson (2008)

FighterOfFoo believes Bronson is the funniest non-comedy, saying, "It's so consistently funny that I'm convinced it was always supposed to be a comedy, but it's just played so straight and theatrically and it gets so dark and weird that it's hard to categorize it as such." Given its genre and the fact that the film's subject is real-life criminal Charles Bronson, dubbed "Britain's most violent convict," the picture has no right to be hilarious.

Yet, the film manages to make audiences laugh with several directorial decisions. Bronson often breaks the fourth wall in the film, speaking directly to the camera and addressing the audience. And, with the criminal demanding that police officers massage lotion on his body faster, it's one of the more ridiculous biopics.

#3 Goodfellas (1990)

Goodfellas is violent, the characters' acts are repulsive, and all of them, even the "made" mobsters, are looking over their shoulders. However, unlike the Godfather trilogy or King of New York, the 1990 picture contains a surprising amount of humor.

George_Parasol mentions how funny some one-liners and minor characters are, citing one of the film's funniest quotations, "I’m gonna go get the papers, get the papers," said Johnny Two-Times, who says everything twice. Even while describing the most horrible crimes and murders, Henry Hill's voiceover is full of wit. But what filmmaker Martin Scorsese does so effectively with the film is making people laugh while remaining afraid, and no better example of this is the "How am I funny?" moment.

#4 Inglourious Basterds (2009)

While the 2009 movie starts with one of the most violent film beginnings of all time, with a 20-minute sequence in which Hans Landa interrogates a dairy farmer, there's no doubt that Inglourious Basterds lightens up after that. Yugo86 feels it's one of the funniest non-comedy flicks.

The user adds, "I say this in real life more than I should," in response to Redditors quoting the scene where the titular American Nazi killers infiltrate the movie premiere. The film contains numerous quotable lines, from impersonating Italian filmmakers to Hans' inability to understand American culture.

#5 Inherent Vice (2014)

Nothing happens in Inherent Vice, but that's part of what makes it so fascinating, as the film follows private detective Doc Sportello while he wanders around 1970s California, solving nothing. GrouchyMacaque thinks the mystery crime thriller is humorous, citing Josh Brolin, who plays Bigfoot in the film.

According to the Redditor, "Brolin's a terrific comedy actor in general, I think. I'd love to see him deadpanning it in a new Naked Gun movie. He'd be perfect for it." Inherent Vice is undoubtedly funnier than the films of writer-director P.T. Anderson, who is best known for the intense dramas There Will Be Blood and The Master. It's no wonder, then, that Anderson poured himself into something a lot lighter-hearted.

#6 Joker (2019)

Todd Phillips, director of the Hangover trilogy and other teen comedies, stunned reviewers with the compelling, well-shot criminal drama Joker. Although the film is grim, Sinularityengine comments that there is plenty of humor. According to the Redditor, "When Gary couldn't reach the door handle and Arthur Fleck was brutally murdering the other guy. Was so absurd and over the top, so obviously played for comedic effect."

The 2019 crime thriller isn't a comedy by any means, but Phillips' comic background clearly shows in some scenes, particularly the one the Redditor mentions. It's easy to imagine the scene as a Hangover sequence if Alan was sitting on the floor instead of Arthur.

#7 Spider-Man (2002)

"I love the film, but when the green goblin crashes open the side of Aunt May's house while she was in the middle of saying her evening prayers and then tells her to 'finish it!!' in a supposedly scary tone, I absolutely lost it," Tenpoundsofbroccoli said of Spider-Man.

But that was on purpose, and it's something filmmaker Sam Raimi is good at. Since the release of The Evil Dead in 1981, he has made a name for himself as a master of horror comedy. And Raimi went full Evil Dead on Doctor Strange, turning the MCU film into a hilariously over-the-top horror comedy.

#8 The Departed (2006)

Django2012 claims "The Departed" is one of the funniest non-comedies of all time.  "People typically just discuss the Mark Wahlberg character as the funny part but everyone gets great jokes and lines, from DiCaprio all the way down to Kevin Corrigan," the Redditor comments.

It might be the Boston vernacular or the alpha male FBI agents cracking jokes about their colleagues' mothers that make the one-liners hit harder. However, whether it's Billy Costigan's weaselly cousin or not, the picture is full of comedy.

#9 The John Wick Series (2014 - Present)

This popular action series, according to Spectralpencils, is the funniest non-comedy movie. "I've been rewatching the John Wick movies lately and they have such a wonderfully deadpan sense of humor," says the Redditor.

Wick and Cassian trying to kill each other while walking through a train station in Roma is downright hilarious. The fight in the knife room is comedic violence that Raimi would be proud of, and almost the entire third act of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum might be labeled a comedy as well. And killing adversaries with a horse by slapping its rear can only be described as humorous.

#10 The Room (2003)

The Room is so badly created, but the entire cast and crew devoted everything to it, including actor-writer-director Tommy Wiseau. The film is meant to be a physically and emotionally exhausting rollercoaster, but it's also one of the most unintentionally humorous films ever created, thanks largely to Wiseau's delivery of his own lines.

According to Mattchamp98, the film is the best non-comedy, and "Tommy Wiseau is an unintentional comedic genius." Unfortunately, Wiseau did not follow up with a sophomore attempt, but The Disaster Artist, a true comedy, is a hilarious film about the making of the now iconic masterpiece.
