The Spirited fake money prop from Ryan Reynolds nearly got used by Octavia Spencer. Oscar winner Spencer said on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" that she attempted to make a transaction on Halloween using fake "Spirited" prop money that had Reynolds' face on it.
Spencer describes how she came dangerously close to paying with a Reynolds-themed piece of fake money from Spirited at the checkout last month. One day Spencer entered a retail checkout line and prepared her cash. She "felt like she had found a treasure" when she found something unexpected in there: a $100 note.
She often carries little to no cash on her person. Spencer, however, noted that Ben Franklin seemed odd as she prepared to pay. As she focused her gaze, she realized that the image of Ben Franklin was actually Reynolds rather than Franklin. Check out Spencer's account of the entire incident:
Spencer: I never have cash with me. And I was all excited. I’m also that customer who’s like ready, I don’t want to be fumbling for my cash or my credit card, when I’m at the register. So I like to find it. I’m like, do I have cash, do I have $5? And I found a $100 bill in my wallet. And I was so proud, because I felt like I had found a treasure. And, so, I’m glad I’m one of those people who likes to be prepared, because I’m looking at the $100 bill and I’m like, ‘Ben Franklin looks really really weird."
Fallon: Yeah, and this is what you gave the person at the store. [holds out a fake $100 note featuring Ryan Reynolds instead of Ben Franklin]
Spencer: I realized it was a prop from Spirited. And I almost paid with it. . . it’s a prop from the set, and I saw it on the floor and thought ‘wow, that’s a great, it looks real.’ And I thought, because I never have money in my wallet, that I would remember. We shot it a year ago. This just happened Hallloween.
It turns out that Spencer had the fake $100 in his wallet for more than a year after "Spirited" wrapped. November 18 marks Apple TV+'s launch of the movie.
Spirited (2022) is Sean Anders' new musical twist on the classic Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" story. In it, Will Ferrell plays the Ghost of Christmas Present, who is turned around by his most recent "Scrooge" (Reynolds). It goes without saying that the joke about Ryan Reynolds' persona appearing on the $100 note is a component of the plot. Octavia Spencer, Rose Byrne, Sunita Mani, Patrick Page, Aimee Carrero, Joe Tippett, P.J. Byrne, and Jimmy Fallon, who plays himself, are all included in Spirited.
