10+ High-Effort And Creative Movie Costumes That Will Make You Immensely Impressed

Jimmy Henton

What sets the wardrobe department apart in an era where CGI is the norm and makeup's transformational abilities are practically limitless?

Some movie outfits become well-known simply because they are so stunning. A completely regular white halterneck became the most famous dress in history when Marilyn posed over a train vent, demonstrating that it is truly how you wear it that matters. Others stand out for other reasons.

Superb clothing provides the right mood and occasionally even makes the message of a narrative clear. When creating costumes for movie characters, costume designers must take into consideration a variety of factors. For instance, they might need to dye fabric many times to achieve the desired shade or create hundreds of the same outfit. And while watching a film, we often overlook the efforts of costume designers. The crew has put tons of effort into making these costumes as stunning as they are.

To demonstrate our point, below are 10+ movie costumes that will show you how much effort was put into designing these fabulous garments.

Karen Patch, a costume designer, made this lovely outfit. To emphasize the magnificence of the Isadora diamond necklace that was lent for the photo, it was turned yellow.

Following the debut of the film, yellow evening gowns—including backless styles with crisscross straps—quickly gained enormous popularity.

Up until the 1930s, a cape with a big hood was a constant component of the women's traditional attire on the Azores islands. It's unclear where this fashion got its start. However, academics contend that these capes were an attempt by the women of this archipelago to evade the male gaze.

These capes are thought to have served as an influence on The Handmaid's Tale costume designers.

#3 Kate Winslet’s dress in Titanic

Director James Cameron offered costume designer Deborah Lynn Scott a challenging assignment before production began. He wanted the clothes to capture the look of the 1910s while still withstanding the players' continuous exposure to water. Scott eventually had to create a few duplicates of specific outfits. For instance, because Kate Winslet's lilac garment would soon lose its form in the salt water, 24 different copies of it were made for the climactic scene.

#4 The Great Gatsby costumes

The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann is more of a contemporary take on the 1920s than a faithful reconstruction of that time period. The construction of the men's clothing, particularly Gatsby's suits, was handled extremely meticulously by the film's creators. They involved Brooks Brothers, who F. Scott Fitzgerald himself had addressed in his books.

Designer Catherine Martin worked with Prada and Miu Miu for women's outfits. The outfits were personally created by Miuccia Prada, the company's owner. Prada and Martin selected 40 outfits and customized them for the film.

The most recent Little Women movie's outfits were heavily influenced by paintings. Winslow Homer's picture of two boys allegedly served as the source of inspiration for the development of the outfits worn by the main characters in one of the film's sequences, according to costume designer Jacqueline Durran.

Also utilized as inspiration were Homer's other artworks.

Women used ear cuffs in antiquity, which were unique jewelry that didn't need earlobe piercings. They frequently covered the whole ear. Even though this ornament was common at that period, costume designers who work on movies about ancient civilizations occasionally overlook it. However, this feature was crucial to the Alexander costume designers. This is the reason why Angelina Jolie, who played the mother of the main character, wore ear cuffs rather than standard earrings.

#7 Anya Taylor-Joy’s peach dress in the movie, Last Night in Soho

A great masterpiece was made by costume designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux for Anya Taylor-role Joy in the film Last Night in Soho in the form of a peach-flowing dress. Dicks-Mireaux claimed that this assignment wasn't the simplest one because she had to create a garment that wouldn't be simultaneously too huge and too tight.

The outfit also had a purpose in the narrative. The clothing in Taylor-dance Joy's moment is meant to symbolize Sandy's innocence and catch Jack's eye at the same time. Ellie is also inspired by this outfit and works on a replica of it the entire time the movie is being made. When picking the color for the outfit, Dicks-Mireaux admitted that she was motivated by images of Twiggy since a peach hue would complement Taylor-skin Joy's hair. It's important to note that the cloth was dyed by the designer herself, and it took her four attempts to acquire the appropriate hue.

#8 Lily James’ dress in Cinderella

Sandy Powell, a well-known costume designer, won everyone over with Cinderella's stunning garment. However, very few people are aware of the difficulty the actress faced in wearing this masterwork. Although it appears breezy and light, the steel corset and crinoline of this gown rendered it quite weighty. Lily James needed 20 minutes to put on the outfit.

There were eight different iterations of this dress as well. For the instances when James had to run, one was made shorter.

#9 Emily Blunt’s dress in The Young Victoria

The outfit Emily Blunt dons for her initial meeting with the council is a replica of the one Queen Victoria wore on this particular occasion. At Kensington Palace, it is on exhibit after having survived. The black dye used at the time was unstable, therefore the garment subsequently faded to a brown color.

#10 Hannibal Lecter’s white costume in The Silence of the Lambs

A nice outfit is not necessarily the result of the efforts of a costume designer. Sometimes, after thoroughly researching their characters, performers may pick out their own attire. Additionally, Anthony Hopkins came up with the brilliant idea to have Hannibal Lecter wear just white because many people are already afraid of medical professionals who wear this hue, such as dentists and physicians.

#11 The ring from the movie, Spencer

One of the most well-known pieces of jewelry in the world had a design alteration at the risk of the producers of Spencer. But we must give them credit; they didn't produce low-quality copies. Instead, they collaborated with famous jewelry maker Mouawad. Since Diana also chose her engagement ring from their catalog, it was so meaningful that all of the jewelry was chosen from it. The ring was not an exact duplicate when it was recreated by Mouawad. It likewise has a sapphire, but this one is 7.25 carats and has 1.82 carats of white diamonds all around it.
