20 Most Ridiculous Backhanded Compliments Mean People Come Up With

Robert Whitman-Byrne

What precisely is a backhanded compliment? Have you ever received one of those odd compliments where the speaker seems to be saying great things about you, but for some reason you feel insulted? That would be it, I suppose.
A backhanded compliment is that strange interaction where someone compliments you on your accomplishment, appearance, or anything else about you, such as "I really like your hair color!" but then adds something to the effect that your previous hair color was actually not up to par, such as "It is so much better than the color you had before!" Does it sound okay? Exactly. Like you were wearing really unattractive hair up until this point. Not really a praise at all.
