In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the film has introduced to us the Spider Society, which consists of hundreds of thousands of friendly neighborhood variants, each coming in unique designs and backgrounds. However, the one Spidey version that stands out the most, got to be the leader of the cluster, Spider-Man 2099, whose real name is Miguel O’Hara. Having caused a tragedy in another’s dimension, Miguel vows to not let the same mistake happens again by establishing the Spider Society, to protect and maintain the balance of the vast Multiverse.

It didn’t take long for fans to love Spider-Man 2099, hailing him as one of the best characters in the franchise. Of course, while having a major role to play in the movie, Miguel’s screen time simply isn’t enough to show us what the futuristic Web-Slinger has in store. #1. His voice actor, Oscar Isaac, stars in three different Marvel roles.

While an actor having multiple Marvel roles isn’t a rare sight to see (for example, Hailee Steinfeld, who plays both Kate Bishop in the MCU and Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Verse franchise), Isaac is the first in history to play not two, but three separate major Marvel characters. His three roles are En Sabah Nuh/Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Marc Spector/Moon Knight in Moon Knight (2022), and Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).

#2. Miguel’s half Irish, half Mexican.

Surprise! Miles Morales isn’t the only half-blood Spider-Man in the movie, since Miguel is one as well. His father is George O’Hara, hence the Irish descendant, but in the comics, the latter’s mother, Conchata, had an affair with her husband boss Tyler Stone and gave birth to Miguel. The boy grew up believing his stepfather was also his biological father, until the truth hit him like a rock.

#3. He didn’t get his powers from a spider’s bite.

While most versions of Spider-People earn their abilities through a radioactive spider’s bite, Miguel gains his arachnid ability from a DNA rewrite process. After unknowingly taking on the Rapture drug by his father Tyler Stone, Miguel attempts to rewrite his DNA to free himself from the addiction, but his petty subordinate Aaron Delgado has tampered with the machines, which alter the former’s genetic code to be “50% spider”. Luckily, Miguel survives, and now he has some powerful superhuman abilities to boot.

#4. Spider-Man 2099 doesn’t have Spider-Sense.

While most versions of the Wall-Crawler have the trademark ability called Spider-Sense (or in MCU’s case, the Peter Tingle), which allows them to sense dangers and distress from afar, the same cannot be said about Miguel’s case. However, he’s complemented by other unique and powerful abilities that no other Spidey variants have, which we will delve right into below.

However, Miguel later temporarily receives an enhanced version of Spider-Sense thanks to Madame Web.

#5. He can shoot organic webs.

While lacking Spider-Sense, Spider-Man 2099 possesses a unique ability to shoot organic webs like Tobey Maguire’s version of Peter Parker. The hero uses this to swing from one building to another, and to restrain criminals. It is said in the comic that Miguel’s webs are chemically identical to real-life spider silk. He also has a cape made out of webs to help him glide through rooftops.

#6. He can grow talons and fangs from his body.

Besides the organic webs, Miguel can also wield another intimidating ability that few others have, which is to biologically grow talons and canine fangs from his fingers and toes. Especially, his fangs can produce non-toxic venom that can temporarily paralyze enemies. Remind me not to get on his bad side.

#7. His original suit has some interesting hidden secrets.

Did you know Spider-Man 2099’s original suit’s color scheme was actually black instead of blue? Due to a coloring error, the color palette was promptly changed, and the creators decided to keep the blue theme to avoid further confusion.

This suit of his is also made of unstable molecules, which can automatically heal on its own and is resilient to different temperature conditions.

#8. He is worthy of wielding the Mjolnir.

Few can wield Thor’s legendary hammer in the comic, so many are surprised when they found out Miguel O’Hara is one of the worthy candidates. In 2099: World of Tomorrow comic, after winning against the powerful Phalanx by cooperating with Doom 2099, the futuristic Web-Slinger is entrusted the Mjolnir by Steve Rogers/Captain America, who’s also capable of using the mythical weapon. 

Miguel lifts the hammer with ease, having proven himself more than worthy of wielding it, and uses it to ensure a peaceful and prosperous era for Earth for the next millennium.

In the comic, Miguel O’Hara once travels to the past and starts a relationship with a woman named Tempest Monroe, who is diagnosed with Leukemia. Miguel successfully cures her with his timeline’s advanced technology, however, the after-effect turns her into a mutated monster. She is pregnant with Miguel’s child, who’s named Gabri, like his older brother.

During one of his time-traveling endeavors, Miguel encounters Spider-Man 2116, who’s later revealed to be Gabri himself. In this universe, the latter also gains arachnid power and wields more advanced technology than his father’s. The family í later reunites after Miguel’s timeline destruction.

#10. He once switched his body with Peter Parker.

While coming from two different timelines, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Parker have numerous encounters in both comics and TV series. One of them is the 1995 Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man comic, in which both superheroes temporarily switch their body with each other due to a temporal anomaly caused by Alchemax and Fujikawa. Both Miguel and Peter Parker have to adapt to the other’s body, and work their way to stop the Great Cataclysm from destroying the Heroic Age.
