Adapting the hotshot titular comedy manga by Tatsuya Endo, Spy x Family has taken the world by storm in spring 2022, and fans are on their seat to know that a new sequel series, Spy x Family: Code White is coming later this year as well. Telling the story of the mysterious agent Twilight who has to reluctantly raise a family on his own as a part of Operation: Strix, and every day is a new struggle for the spy to handle normal family life, including raising his adopted daughter Anya and commuting with his (fake) wife Yor. The anime is widely praised for its wholesome and educational storytelling, while also isn’t short of action-packed sequences and stunning animation scenes.

And like every other anime, Spy x Family also has a bunch of fun facts and cool references hidden under its sleeves, that only the most hardcore fans can tell. #1. Anya’s test subject number back in the lab was 007, which is a subtle reference to the famous British agent James Bond in the titular novel, who has the same code name.

#3. Similarly, his wife’s name, Yor, is also a rather unique one.

Many believe Yor sounds like Yoru, which means “night” in Japanese, which is quite befitting for her assassin status. However, an official fan book of the manga has confirmed that Yor is actually a short version of Yolanda, her real name.

#4. Tatsuya Endo, the author, initially planned to make Franky, our nerdy boy, into Anya’s official uncle. This plan didn’t come through, but we still get to see many wholesome and funny interactions between the two.

#5. According to his official bio in the manga, Loid’s favorite underwear color is black.

#6. Spy x Family takes place in two fictional countries, Ostania and Westalis, which are based on East and West Germany during the Cold War.

#7. WISE, the division Loid’s working for, has a logo consisting of an eye looking to the East. This symbolizes the idea that the organization will always keep an eye on Ostania, the Eastern nation, affairs.

#8. The original design of Anya makes her an older and taller child, which is based on Ashe, a character from Endo’s other manga, Rengoku no Ashe.

#9. When Loid forms his family, he chooses the surname “Forger”, which actually has a deep meaning behind it.

“Forger” is a variation of the word “forgery”, which implies his “family” is a forged family. In a later episode, the protagonist goes by the name Twain Foney when disguised as a tennis player, which deviates from the word “phony” which also means fake.

#10. One of the best things about Anya is her adorable speech patterns, which often sees her mispronounce certain words, which is quite normal for a kid her age.

The author, Tatsuya Endo, has this to say about how he makes Anya’s speech patterns work: “I do think about childish wordings, but most times the little Anya in my head just speaks to me.”
