7 Vegan Celebs Who Returned To Eating Meat

It goes without saying that research supports consuming fewer animal products. There are many advantages to eating a plant-based diet, including those for the environment, the animals themselves, and your body. Plant-based diets typically contain more fiber, antioxidants, and healthier fats than the typical omnivore diet, not to mention that they are substantially better for the environment.

However, completely giving up meat, fish, eggs, and dairy by being vegan has its own set of challenges, like having zombie-like energy levels and having a lot of trouble getting adequate protein without having a degree in plant biology.

For this reason, some former vegetarians have said goodbye to a strict diet of tofu and vegetables and hello to consuming lean protein, eggs, and occasionally even buttered pastries. Continue reading to find out which of the seven stars are now consuming animal products once more, as well as the reasons why so many have switched to a more moderate diet.

Star of Les Miserables Anne Hathaway reveals she experimented with veganism throughout her career, often to prepare for significant parts. She did, however, notice a decline in her vigor and energy while she prepared for the Iceland-shot movie Interstellar. Harpers Bazaar quoted her as saying, “I just didn’t feel good or healthy,” in 2014.

With her co-stars, she chose to eat fish “from a stream I could see from where I was sitting” while dining at a seaside restaurant in Reykjavik. She claims that she “just felt better” the next day. She continued, “my brain felt like a computer rebooting.” as she spoke with Tatler. Hathaway allegedly consumes fish, dairy, and poultry nowadays when she feels the need to (and also abstains from alcohol).

Channing Tatum, the star of Magic Mike, followed a vegan lifestyle for six months in 2013, following the example of his then-wife Jenna Dewan. The constraints on his diet, however, were just temporary, Dewan told Women’s Health in 2018.  “The guy doesn’t like vegetables, which makes it tough. It was hard in the beginning because you want someone to be on the same page, but you’ve got to let people be themselves.”
Dewan, meanwhile, decided to become a vegan when she was 10 years old, and she has stuck with it ever since. “It just stuck. I feel good about it morally and physically,” she told the magazine.

Ellen DeGeneres, a tv host, and comedian converted to veganism in 2008 after watching the animal rights film Earthlings. But she revealed in 2018 during her Relatable Netflix special that she now occasionally eats meat.

“I was healthier than I’d ever been, I loved being vegan,” she said. “But in the last year or two for no real reason, I started eating a piece of fish once in a while.” The celebrity stated that while she still avoids factory farms, she is also open to other animal products. “I’ll eat eggs from chickens I know—if they are in someone’s backyard and they’re wandering around and they’re happy.”

2015 saw Liam Hemsworth turn to veganism. But the celebrity said that he has resumed eating meat in a 2019 interview for Men’s Health after experiencing low energy. “The first two years, I felt great. I felt my energy was high. I felt like my body was strong, cardio was high, everything felt really good,” Hemsworth explained. “But February last year I was feeling really low and lethargic and wasn’t feeling good generally.”

Popstar Miley Cyrus was one of the most outspoken vegans in the celebrity world for many years. But in 2020, she said on a Joe Rogan podcast that she had lately added fish back into her diet, citing health concerns. She said that she cried the first time she added meat back to her diet, saying, “I was vegan for a very long time, and I’ve had to introduce fish and omegas into my life because my brain wasn’t functioning properly,” “Now I’m so much sharper than I was and I think that I was, at one point, pretty malnutritioned [sic]. I remember going to Glastonbury [music festival] and that was a show that I loved—I loved my performance—but I was running on empty,” Cyrus stated.

#6 Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson, a veteran actor in the entertainment industry, started shedding weight in 2014 while portraying Nick Fury in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. At the time, he told reporters, “It’s a new vegan diet. “Just trying to live forever. Trying to finish out my Marvel deal,” Jackson remarked.

However, once the change in his appearance grew even more obvious the next year, the celebrity changed his tune, almost costing him a significant movie job. “They threatened to fire me from the Tarzan movie if I didn’t gain 20 pounds. I’d wound up losing 40 pounds,” he explained on the radio show The Breakfast Club. “So I decided to go eat and now I’m not a vegan anymore.”

#7 Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel, star of New Girl, spoke openly about discontinuing her vegan diet in a 2011 issue of Health magazine. Since high school, Emily Deschanel, the star of Bones, “has been a very, very devout vegan,” she added. “I wish I could be like that, but I’m not. I have a lot of food sensitivities—I can’t eat wheat or soy—and it was very difficult to eat and get enough calories,” she said, adding, “It was even impossible to eat at a vegan restaurant.”

She revealed to New York Magazine later that year that she had broken her vegan fast while eating at a sushi restaurant. You have to admit, “At a certain point, you just have to go, ‘You know, this gets in the way of my living too much,” she reasoned, at some time.
