10 Actors Who Suffered After Their Miserable “Makeovers” For Their Iconic Roles

To bring their characters to life, some actors took it to the extreme and endured miserable transformations. These “makeovers” can leave undesired effects on their bodies or their mentality. Even though they changed their look as soon as they were done with the role, they still had to face the consequences. Here are 10 times famous actors who suffered through extreme makeovers for their most iconic roles.

Nowadays we all know Ariana Grande’s signature look is her high ponytail, but not many of us know its origin. The famous singers’ hair wasn’t always like this. In fact, Ariana started to style her hair this way because her hair was so damaged after her time playing Cat Valentine in Victorious.
To nail the character, she had to continuously bleach her hair and dye it red for years. This resulted in extremely damaged hair that looked "absolutely ratchet and absurd." Ariana tried wigs and weaves to conceal the badly damaged hair but they never looked right. She then tried to style her hair into a ponytail with extensions and that worked. It looked so amazing that it became her signature look to this day.

2. Zendaya - Rocky Blue In Shake It Up

Another star who suffered from awful hair damage is Zendaya. Back in the days when she was still a Disney star, she had to regularly curl her hair and style it with heat for her role as Rocky Blue in Shake It Up. This ruined her hair and took years to recover.
The actress shared with People Magazine: "I was only 14 years old, and I didn't know how to protect my hair, so it took over two years to grow it back, which really sucked!"

3. Miley Cyrus - Hannah Montana In Hannah Montana

Speaking of Disney, even though she became a star thanks to the beloved show Hannah Montana, Miley Cirus isn’t a big fan of her role. Having to put on a blond wig and heavy make-up for years has led to some serious body dysmorphia for the singer. She admitted to Marie Claire magazine that when the show ended, she didn't know who she was anymore as she was "made pretty" for so long. Miley shared, "I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn't on that show, it was like, who the f*ck am I?"

4. Sophie Turner - Sansa Stark In Game of Thrones

Many people know Sophie Turner as her iconic character in HBO’s series Game of Thrones, but behind her amazing performance are hard work and sacrifices. She was a natural blonde, so to pull off Sansa’s look, the actress had to constantly dye her hair red and then blonde again. “It destroyed my hair to the point that I had to use a wig for Game of Thrones," she shared with Glamour.
She also claimed that if she dyed it back to red, her hair would've fallen out. Turner later wrote on her Twitter that it wasn’t the red dye from "Game of Thrones" that ruined her hair, but another dye when she tried to go back to blonde.

Tom Felton’s makeover for his iconic role as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter is perhaps one of the most brutal hair-damaging makeovers ever. His natural hair color was brown, so to achieve the platinum blond look like the character, he had to dye his hair every 10 days to prevent dark roots. Of course this led to extreme hair loss and permanent damage to the scalp.
But his hair wasn’t the only thing that had to stay white. In order to keep his pale skin, Felton wasn't allowed to “lay in the sun.” The actor even had to wear SPF 50 and sit under an umbrella with three caps on every time he was in the sun.

6. Jim Carrey - The Grinch In How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The daily makeup transformation that Jim Carrey had to go through to play the Grinch in the classic The Grinch In How the Grinch Stole Christmas was not a fun time for the actor. In fact, it was so torturous that the film had to hire someone who trains CIA operatives on how to endure torture to help Carrey with his daily routine. He was “being buried alive every day." The makeover process on the first day took eight and a half hours, no wonder why the man wanted to quit.

7. Chris Evans - Steve Rogers In Captain America

To be in his best shape for his role as the legendary hero Steve Rogers in Captain America, Chris Evans spent hours after hours at the gym to gain muscle. “It was grueling," he said. "It was brutal, and I’d find any excuse possible not to go." But in the end, he still did it and ended up with 20-30 pounds of muscle.
As soon as the camera stopped rolling, he "stopped going to the gym completely for about three months.” The actor is happy now that he doesn’t have to keep bulking up. He lost 15 pounds since his time as Cap was over, but the actor is quite happy with it.

8. Matt Damon - Jason Bourne In Bourne Films

Another actor that had to keep grinding at the gym for his role is Matt Damon. To play Jason Bourne in the Bourne films, Damon trained vigorously. "It’s not worth it! … It’s no way for any of us to live," he said. “Unless it’s your job, three hours a day in the gym, or two hours and then a long run later…or a long hike with a weight vest on…it just sucks."

9. Daniel Craig - James Bond In Bond Films

This is not a makeover, but more than an accident that was caused by Daniel Craig’s dedication to his role. He loves doing his own stunts. This caused him to lose two front teeth during the filming of Casino Royale and the tip of one of his fingers in Quantum of Solace.

10. Josh Hutcherson - Peeta Mellark In The Hunger Games

As soon as Josh Hutcherson was done playing Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games, he immediately dyed his hair back to its natural color. The actor couldn’t stand to dye his natural brown hair blonde, even for his iconic role in the blockbuster.
"That's the thing that I was like, 'Get out of here!' Having to do touch-ups all the time and get my hair re-dyed and bleached, was not my thing at all," Hutcherson said.
