By uploading funny comics about her daily life, this Australian mother and artist, Jess Rae, hopes to achieve this. Jess Rae was a projectionist before she began sketching. The artist had previously worked at a bead shop where she had the opportunity to play with beads all day. She started creating cartoons on a kids’ sketching app because she was getting tired of an abundance of words on her Facebook feeds. Jess simply drew on her phone with her finger. She soon upgraded to an iPad and an Apple Pencil when her brother asked the local newspaper if they would consider publishing her comics. She also switched from Doodle Buddy to Clip Studio, which allowed her to create layers and draw with vector lines. She has drawn many illustrations these days for publications, websites, and logos, and recently created a podcast title for the Australian ABC.
At one point, Jess’s drive for drawing came from the approval she received from others who liked and shared her cartoons. Unfortunately, her work had a sharp decline in popularity before COVID-19 due to the Instagram algorithm change. She now draws more naturally and doesn’t care as much about the numbers. It’s actually worthwhile! Looking at her comics today, she portrays a variety of issues that women encounter on a daily basis.
