Why Halle Bailey Is A Perfect Disney Princess?

Disney has a reputation for making an iconic couple of live-action adaptations. Following numerous internet arguments and hunches, Disney confirmed that Halle Bailey will play the classic Disney princess from the sea.
While many cheered for the young actress, some were disappointed that Disney chose an actress "who doesn't look like Ariel." The attitude around Halle Bailey as Ariel this time was no different than when it was first announced in 2019, and many people are still disappointed. People have the right to their own opinions, but if you need more proof that Halle Bailey is the perfect fit for the rebellious Disney Princess, here are the reasons:

1. Her vocal is perfectly fit for the character Ariel

Together with her sister Chole, Halle Bailey makes up half of the iconic R&B duo. The two began uploading song covers on YouTube, before getting acknowledged by Beyonce. Later on, they were signed by Parkwood Entertainment for a six-album deal. Just listen to Chloe x Halle’s raw vocals in this short cover of Desiigner’s Timmy Turner. You can definitely hear Halle Bailey effortlessly harmonize with her sister’s vocals and the way she hit those notes flawlessly. Watch her performance of Elton John's ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ for Disney World's 50th-anniversary celebration below:

Heck, even the OG Ariel, Jodi Benson, showed her support for the actress. The voice actress of Ariel from 1989 took to Instagram to shower Halle Bailey with nothing but praises. She writes, “Halle, you were amazing! I’m SO proud of you and your beautiful performance as Ariel.” Well, when the first Ariel gives her seal of approval, you best believe that her successor will do a great job.

Halle Bailey also has great acting skills. She currently appears on Grown-ish as Skylar "Sky" Forster. In the middle of such a large cast, Halle knows how to stand out as Sky with her quick wit and caustic comebacks. Despite some similarities with her sibling, Sky was more determined and finally headed to Tokyo 2020, mirroring Halle's own goals. Of course, a support role can only show off a part of her abilities. At the very least, we'll get to watch more of Halle take the lead in The Little Mermaid.
Before Bailey’s casting, only one other Black actor had been crowned a Disney princess (Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog”), so she understands the barrier-breaking importance of donning Ariel’s fins. “I want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that they’re special and that they should be a princess in every single way,” Bailey says. “There’s no reason that they shouldn’t be. That reassurance was something that I needed.”

Most fans were thrilled at the news that Bailey would play Ariel. There are even people who show they're against the prospect of a Black mermaid princess with the hashtag #NotMyAriel. The criticism exploded.
However, Bailey chooses to protect the right. She also got an important perspective from her grandparents, who shared memories of the racism and discrimination that they had endured in their lifetimes. “It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you,’” Bailey recalls.

Fair and square, Halle Bailey won the part for a reason. She checked off every need that casting directors and executives had for a contemporary Disney Princess. The Little Mermaid director Rob Marshall wrote in a statement in 2019 explaining the decision. He explains, “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance—plus a glorious singing voice—all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”
