Ryan Pagelow is a Chicago-based artist who has been making comics since 2009. After starting out his career by drawing comic strips that appeared in university newspapers, he started to work freelance for Mad magazine. The fact that his first brainchild, Buni, has been featured on two popular comic websites, GoComics and Webtoon, surprised him a lot. He also works as a full-time photographer and videographer as he enjoys capturing both the outside and internal worlds.
The “Buni” series starts as a journey of a bunny full of positive energy yet always dealing with terrible luck. Its characters are everything, from teddy bears, and cupcakes to unicorns, and zombies. As it’s a mostly wordless comic, the artist always thinks out of the box and steps out of the usual concepts so as to entertain anyone reading his works. “I wanted to create a world that was big enough to keep me entertained for years rather than be boxed in by a narrow set of perimeters.”
Ryan Pagelow’ motivation has resulted in admirable worldwide success. New Zealand crematorium once asked him to use one of his works on a Billboard as their services’ advertiser. In 2013, he was syndicated, and got his “Buni” series recognized as the best online comic by the National Cartoonists Society. “Meeting some of the cartoonists I grew up reading was great.”
