Marvel films have conquered the cinema world since the first movie “Iron Man” was released in 2008. After more than a decade, Marvel Studios has made and released 29 films and become the highest-grossing film franchise, which has grossed over $26.9 billion at the global box office. Still, superhero movies have become the most prominent in the cinema and shown no sign of going down. In addition, the actors who have appeared in that movie franchise have a vast advantage of earning Academy Awards or other awards. 10+ Actors Who Turned Down Big Marvel Roles.
However, some actors turned down the offer to work in a Marvel film. For some reason, they refused an excellent opportunity to shine as the most prominent names recently, such as Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, and Chris Hemsworth. Some celebrities decided to join the cast of other movies. Some didn’t want to become a part of a franchise after it had succeeded.
We all wonder whether they regret their decision in the past. And below are 15 actors who turned down marvel roles. Let’s check them out!

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of those Stars who prefer quality over quantity in every case. You can go through his filmography and find out that every role he has portrayed until now had something unique about it. His diverse filmography was close to adding a superhero movie in the late 90s when he was approached to perform Peter Parker/Spider-man under James Cameron’s direction.
The Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio turned the offer, citing not being ready to put on a suit as the main reason. DiCaprio’s rejection and other reasons gave Sam Raimi a chance to take center stage and create an unforgettable trilogy that will stay with audiences forever.

#2 Tom Cruise (Iron Man)

First of all, we all agree that anybody except Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t simply meant for the role of the “Genius,” “Playboy,” or “Billionaire” and “Philanthropist” Tony Stark. Before RDJ accepted and turned an unbelievable character into the most beloved Super Hero, Tom Cruise was supposed to produce and star as the main character in the movie Iron Man.
However, MCU’s struggle in getting the rights of the Iron Man character caused Cruise to lose interest in the project eventually. There are rumors of him appealing to have his face shown even while he was suited up. Luckily, these hurdles paved the way for MCU to reach out to Robert Downey Jr.; what followed doesn’t need further clarification!

#3 Joseph Gordon Levitt (Star-Lord)

Chris Prat has brilliantly portrayed the role of Peter Quill, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing that role. But Pratt wasn’t MCU’s first pick for the 2014 space adventure flick.
Joseph Gordon Levitt was invited to bring the superhero to life. Levitt refused the offer to join the cast of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For because this casting has worked together for a long time. The Studio moved on and eventually cast Chris Pratt.

#4 Joaquin Phoenix (Hulk and Dr. Strange)

Having a Superstar like Joaquin Phoenix, who becomes the character they're portraying, is a massive plus for any Studio. The MCU keeps pushing to get the Phoenix cast, first Bruce Banner/The Hulk and then Dr. Stephen Strange.
However, the Joker star refused every offer made by Marvel because he didn’t feel such roles would be fulfilling. Props to Phoenix for following his heart even when constantly reaching out with tempting offers.

#5 Rachel McAdams (Pepper Pots)

Tony Stark’s love interest Pepper Potts has had quite an eventful arc in the MCU. The character has portrayed a crucial role in the Iron Man trilogy and the MCU. Therefore, a credible name was required to play the role to perfection, and Gwyneth Paltrow was the ideal pick for the part.
Before Paltrow, Rachel McAdams was closed to starring opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU films. McAdams denied the offer due to scheduling conflicts and missed out on a great opportunity. And luckily for both McAdams and her fans, she made her MCU debut in Doctor Strange.

Matthey McConaughey was invited to portray Star-Lord’s father Ego in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He turned down the offer to join the franchise because he thought it would be an amendment to appear in a film series after its success.

In 2013, Alec Baldwin talked about starring in a Marvel movie. However, his wife's pregnancy led him to decline and not discuss his potential role in detail. We can guess about Baldwin’s role all we want, but the truth, even to this day, remains hidden between Baldwin himself and a small number of people.

Jensen Ackles was supposed to play Hawkeye, and Ackles agreed. However, he had to decide between MCU and Supernatural due to scheduling conflicts, and Ackles ended up going with the latter. As much as we'd love to see Acker alongside the rest of the Avengers, an MCU without Jeremy Renner is unthinkable!

#9 Olivia Wilde (Gamora)

Zoe Saldana has excellently portrayed Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for five years. However, at one point, there was a strong possibility of her not getting the part as the Studio originally wanted Olivia Wilde to play the green-skinned assassin.
However, Wilde declined the role due to scheduling conflicts. Though Saldana and the rest of the cast have done a fantastic job, Wilde could have been a valuable addition to the MCU, and we can bet that this thought comes to her mind now and then.

Emily Blunt was ready to play Black Widow. Everything was fine before Blunt's conflicting schedule played a big part. Her commitment to the Gulliver's Travels project led her to decline to join the MCU.

Quinton Jackson was also offered the role of John Wraith, the teleporting mutant, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, Jackson didn’t participate as he had to decline it in favor of training for an upcoming fight. We can all agree that Iron Man 3 is remembered for several reasons. Still, Maya Hansen’s character is not one of them. However, the character still plays an essential role in the film. Rebecca Hall played the botanist, but the part was initially intended for a much bigger name, i.e., Jessica Chastain.Although Chastain couldn’t land the part due to scheduling conflicts, a few years later, she was announced as one of the cast members of the Marvel film X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

You could say that 2003's Daredevil failed to impact the superhero movie genre positively. It even left a bad taste in the mouth of lead actor Ben Affleck, who eventually shied away from Superhero roles until he took on the role of Batman in the DC Extended Universe.
Therefore, it can be said that Daredevil is a disappointing film, and anyone involved with the film will not be happy to be involved in the project. Matt Damon could be among those when he was offered the role of the iconic character at one point. However, he ultimately turned down the offer due to his unfamiliarity with the director (Mark Steven Johnson).

#15 Jason Momoa (Drax the Destroyer)

Momoa's portrayal of Aquaman impressed everyone. Although he has just played the King of Atlantis in 3 DC movies, fans have already hailed him as irreplaceable. At one point, however, there was a strong chance of MCU signing the actor to star as Drax, the Destroyer of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Luckily for everyone, he declined because he was concerned about getting type-casted. He thinks Drax’s role is similar to those he had already played multiple times. Momoa’s loss was Dave Bautista’s gain, and MCU’s loss was DCEU’s gain. Now, we have excellent stars portraying the roles of Drax and Aquaman.
