According to the official website, the competition occurs at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds and Event Center in Petaluma, California. The contest is held to celebrate the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique. Like Mr. Happy Face, the majority of the candidates were rescue canines.
A Pekingese named Wild Thang won second place, while musician Jeneda Benally and her cherished senior dog received $1,500 (£1,230) in prize money and a trip to New York City to appear on the Today Show.

In August 2021, a hairless Chinese crested-Chihuahua mix was saved from a shelter in Arizona. Benally said he was an "old dog" and probably wouldn't survive more than a month. People, who want to adopt this dog, are concerned about its lifelong requirement for medicine to cure various cancers and ailments.
"When I first met him, he was the happiest creature that I had ever met. He hobbled up to me and chose me," Benally said to the Today Show. "I vowed that day he would be so loved that he would never remember how awful his previous life had been."

The proud dog owner wants to encourage people to look beyond physical limits and age by sharing her senior rescue.
"I believe that this humble soul is also being an example, in subtle ways, to help humans realize that even old dogs need love and a family, too," Benally said. She hopes that love, kindness, and her kisses have helped him defy the anticipated short life that she all expected him to have with her family.
After his media appearances, Mr. Happy Face will return to his usual activities, including playing with his canine siblings, indulging in stinky foods, spending time with his mother, and making the most of every day.
