Cats were essential on ships as they would protect the ship and its cargo from rodents. However, since 1975, the Royal Navy doesn’t allow cats or any other pets to ride aboard anymore due to hygiene concerns.

When a cat approached the deck, sailors would consider it a lucky sign, but if the cat just approached the deck partially before turning around, it would be unlucky. However, other countries will consider a negative meaning once the cat appears in their work.

Others also believed that a cat's keen eyesight would come in handy during a shipwreck at night, as they could quickly spot distant lights.Black cats were considered lucky on the ship. However, others supposed they could damage stuff or scrape clothes.

Regarding a shipwreck, there was a cat named Oscar on a German battleship. When the ship sunk, Oscar survived and was rescued by a different vessel. Before it was determined to provide him with a permanent home on land, he went through the same experience three times. Additionally, Oscar was given a new nickname Unsinkable Sam after being transferred to a new place.
