Was Thanos Aware About The Emergence Of The Celestials In Infinity War And Endgame?

Eternals takes place after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and it addresses Thanos’ snap on one occasion. However, after learning about “The Emergence,” a question is raised: Did Thanos know about the emergence Tiamut’s existence in Infinity War? Thanos was the major adversary in the first three stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, known collectively as the Infinity Saga, which chronicled his journey to get the Infinity Stones and Infinity Gauntlet. Although Thanos gained what he intended, his disastrous acts were reversed in Avengers: Endgame, and he and his forces were vanquished, allowing the MCU to discover different individuals, events, and threats in Phase 4.

The multiverse is the core concept of Phase 4 of the MCU, but Marvel is also taking the opportunity to introduce new characters whose storylines are independent of the universe (at least for now). Among them are the Eternals, who made their debut in Chloé Zhao’s film. The Eternals are an extraterrestrial species sent to Earth by the Celestial Arishem to guard it against the Deviants, their demonic opposites. The team lingered on Earth for centuries, never interfering in human wars, and eventually split up. The Eternals reassembled many years later when the Deviants resurfaced, their leader Ajak was assassinated, and a cataclysmic catastrophe known as “The Emergence” awaited.

The rest of the crew discovered the truth about the Eternals’ history and mission from Sersi, the new leader of the Eternals, as well as what The Emergence was really about: the birth of a Celestial whose seed was put on Earth, and his bodily emergence would trigger the planet’s annihilation. Tiamut was the Celestial supposed to be created from Earth, but because of the close link that most of the Eternals had formed with humans, they banded together and prevented Tiamut’s birth, thereby saving Earth. According to Eternals, the Deviants turned rogue, thus the Eternals were formed and sent to Earth to halt them so mankind could live, as the earth required human energy for Tiamut to form. It is also said that Thanos’ snap delayed The Emergence, leading the viewer to wonder if Thanos was aware of Tiamut’s birth.

Was Thanos Aware About The Emergence
Thanos’ objective was to collect all of the Infinity Stones, as well as the Infinity Gauntlet, to wipe out half of all life in the universe to restore harmony. Thanos’ motivation to “rescue” the universe by eradicating half of its people stemmed from seeing the downfall of his home planet, Titan, due to overpopulation. Thanos gained what he wanted in Avengers: Infinity War, but half of the universe was resurrected in Avengers: Endgame, and The Emergence was postponed since it required a specific number of humans and energy to occur. It’s not directly stated in Eternals or any other MCU film if Thanos was aware of The Emergence in Infinity War or not, but he most certainly was. Thanos sought to protect life in the cosmos (although through unethical means), and The Emergence, which meant the annihilation of entire worlds, went against that. The snap would have been much more crucial to him since it would have delayed The Emergence, sparing worlds and lives.

With Thanos destroyed thanks to Iron Man’s snap in Avengers: Endgame, the MCU is progressing forward with emerging challenges and more, but given Thanos’ correlation to the Eternals (especially now that his brother, Eros, has been presented) and the influence of the Snap in the MCU, Marvel should raise the matter of whether Thanos was aware of The Emergence when he intended the snap, and how much he was aware of it.
