Photographer Captures Beautiful Scene Over 100 Baby Crocodiles Are Given Safe Ride On Their Father’s Back

The Gharial crocodile refers to a sub-species of Asian crocodile characterized by their long, thin snouts. Reaching between 12 to 15 feet in length and 2,000 pounds in weight, they are the largest of all the living crocodiles. However, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified these animals as critically endangered. With the population decline since the 1940s, nowadays Gharials can only be found in India and Nepal.

An Indian wildlife and conservation photographer, Dhritiman Mukherjee, has recently been able to capture these reptiles on camera. His photo in which an endangered male Gharial gives his 100 babies a lift is considered a possible candidate for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest run by London’s Natural History Museum. It is a rare scene to behold.

One thing about the picture that needs mentioning is that the father crocodile is doing his part to help out their population (now estimated to be under 1,000 individuals).

“This male had mated with seven or eight females, and you can see that it was very much involved,” said Mukherjee.

“Normally the Gharial is quite a shy crocodile compared with the saltwater and marsh crocs. But this one was very protective and if I got too close, it would charge me. It could be very aggressive.”

The photographer stayed at a safe-enough distance and was able to take some snaps of the heartwarming moment. Usually, crocodiles carry their offspring in their mouths, but the Gharial’s odd snouts prevent them to do so, instead, the babies gather on their parents’ backs and stay safe there.

Father crocodiles taking care of his young is also hardly seen, but this dad does that for the survival of his family. Take a look at other impressive photos taken by Mukherjee:
