Artist Hannah Bullen-Ryner, with her keen eye and attention to detail, has created a series of stunning portraits of our feathered friends. She arranges branches, leaves, petals and berries into lively, tiny birds on the ground like works of land art.

Hannah’s works are no different from the beautiful paintings of a real artist, in which each small detail is layered like brushstrokes. Given this aesthetic, it's no surprise that she practiced art as a painter and photographer.

But when experimenting with creativity and taste in plants, Hanna discovered a great joy. “Finding the medium of geological art as a connection between my art and the earth, my soul desperately needed this connection,” she shared. “As a full-time mother of three-year-old twin daughters, and a constant worrier, art has provided me with quiet and peaceful moments.”

Each of Bullen-Ryner's pieces is made with materials found locally as well as from other sources she could discover. Using no fixing technique, her creations can only last for a few minutes before their parts start to be blown away.

So why did she choose to work this way? "Some often wonder why I don't make something more permanent; others express their pity that my works are only temporary," says Bullen-Ryner.

“But for me, the ephemeral nature of what I do has become therapy for the soul. I removed all worries, fears, and chaos from my mind and turned those into something beautiful to honor Mother Nature. I take a few pictures and then go for a walk or bike ride, leave it all behind and feel calmer, more connected and really lighter.”
